The important part of Kitamura/Taiga is that Kitamura confessed to her a year ago and was shot down. So by the time Taiga decides she does like him, he's had a ton of time to process his feelings and move past them. Him continuing to involve him self in Taiga's circle despite that fact that he doesn't really "like" her anymore, has always been one of my favorite parts of the show. Lot's of brain bending trying to read between the lines.
