I Love Oregairu so much, thank you for the reactions! It always makes me happy seeing others discover the series/novels. Anyway it's true that you need to pay a lot of attention on details to understand everything, it helps having read the novels so, again, I'm gonna copy-paste on the replies my thoughts. It's old stuff I wrote few years back, don't mind the weird chars, it was sanitized to avoid block from Youtube automatic spell checker, but I can assure there's nothing offensive in it.

================= 1/15 The day after (Excerpt from the novel) - There’s a small missing scene before the start of this episode (see novel’s notes) - Yukino is usually the first to come to the club (save in S3E2), the fact that Hachiman arrived first tell us that even if he’ll never admit, he was eager to come, also Yukino was surely feeeling awkward and embarrassed and probably took her time. - Yukino tosses the key of the club room to Hachiman. The ones who have read all my ramblings so far, surely know the importance of these keys. The last time we talked about it was at the end of S3E8, but even before they keys are often mentioned, for example in volume 6 (S1E12), Vol 8 (S2E4 and S2E5), Vol 9 (S2E7), Vol 12 (S3E2). Also the title of S3E2 is literally “I had never touched that key until today”. Remembering all these moments the scene when Yukino toss the key to Hachiman is so meaningful, so much that it pains me that most of the viewers and even readers won’t realize how important this is. This scene symbolized how Yukino finally let someone else get an hold to the key of her heart. (More on that on Novel’s section ). - For the whole series, up until now, Hachiman and Yukino always sat at the opposite end of the table, now they’re sitting next to each other, so much that they even get embarrassed as they lock eyes. It’s no wonder that not only Iroha, but everyone else too understood immediately what was going on. - Hachiman now “is drµnk” (part 1) Haruno told him that he could not get drµnk in S3E2, and repeated it in S3E10, I’ve already covered what that mean, also Hachiman himself said it to Hiratsuka at the start of S3E11. There’s a couple of scenes in this episode to show how now Hachiman can indeed “get drµnk”, and the first one is when he and Yukino are planning the prom. Hachiman is puzzled about the location of the prom and Yukino have to explain it to him, but you should remember that S3E6 he was the one who came up with the idea of making the prom outside the school because it was a joint school prom. He’s also surprised that it’s held at the beach even if, as Yukino point out, it was himself to launch that idea always in S3E6, when he write it on the whiteboard. (Continued in part 2, found in section 2). - While preparing to use the laptop Yukino finally put back on the glasses that Hachiman gave her as a gift in S2E10. The last time we saw those glasses was in S3E5, as she refused to put them on in a childish but defiant act to avoid getting any help from him. The fact that she wear the glasses once again is the first sign that she have grown past her insecurity, as she’s now confident to accept help. The his theme will be clearer later in the scene outside the sauna.

======================= 2/15 The date (No spoiler) - My Hayami Saori favorite performance is when Yukino ask if the photo is g00d to Hachiman, this woman is so talented... - My Takeya Eguchi favorite performance is when Hachiman rapid fire compliments Yukino in his head at the start of the date, and when he react thinking that Yukino is talking about marriage. - Yukino hairstyle is from S1E6, even if it’s slightly different (the twintails are lower) Hachiman is referencing that time. Of course Yukino choose the hairstyle on purpose to make him remember it. Re-watching the date they had back with the knowledge of the full plot, makes you really understand a lof of things you may have missed on the first time, especially all the times that Yukino is nervous, fidget and even blushes, as she cover her nervousness with her bantering. She even admitted that with teary eyes in S3E8. - Hachiman from S1E6 (around 9:58 of the episode): “Her boyfriend’s the last thing I wanna be” Hachiman from S3E12: “Hold up, She’s adorable. Oh man, how is this possible? She super cute.” I so love it… - Yukino link arms with Hachiman to take a selfie together. Besides the cuteness of the scene I would like you to remember how many times Yukino said “you’re too close” when someone tried close contact, one for all was in S2E9 at the start of the episode when Yui sit close to Yukino, but there’s many more instances. Here is Yukino herself who take the step of getting closer, which show how she’s finally able to express her feelings freely, even with all the romantic awkwardness of 2 people who are truly in love for the first time. - Hachiman now “is drµnk” (part 2) The scene when Hachiman is thinking that Yukino is talking about marriage is wonderful, not only because is hilarious, but also because it have more than one meaning. We can say that both Hachiman and Yukino are quite favorable to the idea of marriage, and so this is a clever way to show what will happen without using a time skip. About this interpretation the novel go even more deeper as the two of them even talk about their future (see last section). The second interpretation, more meaningful for the plot, is that now Hachiman is finally able to get swept by his own feelings, he doesn’t read between the lines anymore (as he said in S2E8), he practically takes what Yukino says at face value without any doubt. Using Haruno’s words, he’s finally able to get “drµnk”. The purpose of this scene is to show how much Hachiman have grown, as the old Hachiman would never have let himself to be swept by the moment, and all thanks to Yukino’s influence on him. - Even if the date scene is only a few minutes long, please notice the difference in lighting between the start of the date, where the sun is probably at noon considering that’s March, to the end, where it’s the sunset. They spent all day together even if the official motivation was to search for a place to hold the prom. - I love how during the whole episode Yukino is smiling and beaming happiness as she never did before. It’s so refreshing and at the same time it might make you think that now is a complete different person, but in reality she’s just the same, the only difference is that now she’s finally able to be herself out in the open. Now is the time to remember a phrase that Hiratsuka sensei said about Yukino in S1E2: “Deep down, she’s a kind soul. She’s kind and quite often right, but this world is neither a kind nor a righteous place. It must be hard for her to live here.” Really Hiratsuka sensei knew from the start what was behind Yukino’s mask. Also this is directed to everyone complaining that the characters have changed too much, the author made it very clear from the start that what you was seeing in the beginning was nothing more than masks, and this story is one where they will be finally able to be themselves.

===================== 3/15 Prom Preparations (No spoiler) - Yumiko: “We didn’t come here for your sake or anything, you know.” Yumiko now is a full blown tsundere, as we understand when Hachiman says “Did you ask them to come?” and Yukino denies, meaning that they indeed came on their own will to help Hachiman and Yukino. Yumiko tsundere personality is even more evident in the novel as she have an additional scene where she show her kindness (See novel section). - Hachiman and Yukino talents finally combined are a sight to behold, especially in the novel which is more detailed on how they practically realize this prom, and we see both of them doing what they can do best, but this time in a combined effort. - Yukino: “This is bad. I feel like I could just die.” As far as my memory goes, this is the first time that Yukino openly admit to be overworked, which also serve the purpose of explaining what happen next. - Hachiman looks at Yukino absorbed into work from the side and he realizes that if this will keep going she will exhaust herself like she did in S1E10-11. The next thing that Hachiman does is to use the request that Zaimokuza gave him “I’m bereft of materials” as an excuse to make sure that Yukino can take a break because she have poor stamina. There’s many other occasions where we’ve see Yukino poor stamina, on top of my head S1E3 on the tennis match and S2E2 after they climb the stairs to the temple. He confirms his intentions exchanging an understanding look with Iroha, who get what he means because of what happened in S3E3. Back then Hachiman chastised Iroha into not relying too much on Yukino because she tends overwork herself, and halfway into the episode Iroha understood what Hachiman meant. Having understood his intentions Iroha proposes Yukino to take a break, but Hachiman need to prolong that break to let Yukino rest, as he understands her very well by now (I talked about understanding in the previous episode’s notes as well) he know she would argue against a break if he asked her directly, so he come up with the excuse of the sauna to make Yukino and the girls wait for them. (continued in section 5)

==================== 4/15 Sauna (No spoilers) - The sauna setting is smartly used by Watari (the novel’s author) to conclude Hayato’s arc, which is sadly not seen in the anime (also from how the novel is written it looks like the author likes saunas). First I would like to point out that it’s Tobe the one who ask to Hachiman if he’s dating Yukino. You know who Tobe is, he’s the $tupid one, so him asking it basically means that if he could see it then everyone could (Zaimokuza is an exception because he lives in his own world). If we want to say it from another perspective then it means that they were quite obvious in their interaction even in the open, as we can see during the preparation of the prom and the two of them are very chummy right in front of everyone like if they didn’t even notices they’re in public. But I have to concede that the anime the scene was heavily cut, as it makes more sense in the novel (more on that in the novel’s section).

2023-05-19 07:37:42 ==================== 5/15 Interdependence (No spoilers) - Iroha: “Senpai, you’re late!” Of course he is, he orchestrated the whole sauna trip just to make Yukino rest, that’s why he took his time. In fact we can see that it’s already evening and he have the gull of saying “Aren’t you guys just too early?”, that’s prime Hachiman bantering. - Yukino and Yui lean on each other, is a wonderful view and also connected to the date scene from before, that show how Yukino is now much more comfortable in physical contact. - Yukino: “I can stand of my own” Hachiman: “I know” The hand scene is phenomenal, probably one of my favorite ever. Finally sure of their own feelings and their worth, Yukino is able to stand up by herself, but this also mean that she’s now comfortable in accepting his hand and his help moving forward, an help that he promise he’ll always be willingly to give, which also express their willingness to maintain this relationship forever (In Vol 14.5 there’s a very cute scene that reinforce this interpretation). The only blemish in this scene is that the animators didn’t represent their shadows as are described in the novel which is so very poetic and romantic: << Both her shadow and my shadow became one, and no one could distinguish whose shadow was whose.>>

=================== 6/15 Komachi and Iroha (No spoilers) - Iroha call Komachi “the rice girl” This is be cause Komachi is also the name of a brand of rice. Iroha remember Komachi because they talked already about her in S2E12, when Hachiman said he will receive Valentine’s chocolate from his sister. Back then the translator localized Iroha response with “Koma Cheese” to make it sound similar to her name, but in reality Iroha was talking about the rice brand. - Komachi knows about Hachiman, Yukino and Yui situation. Hachiman talked with her as he promised at the start of S3E9. The scene (which is at the start of Shin Vol. 1) is hilarious as a cringing Komachi will describe it as if your parents will start tell you the story on how they fell in love. - I love how Yukino and Hachiman are so chummy in front of everyone without even realizing it. No wonder everyone knows that they’re dating even if they refused to talk about it. - Iroha: “He’s obsessed with taking responsibility, you know.” Here Iroha, other than planning an hilarious honey trap, is referring to her past conversation with Hachiman in S3E5. We talked about Hachiman and the theme of responsibility in the previous episode (S3E11), so you can go back and check it if you missed it. - In their very twisted way Iroha and Komachi are actively trying to cheer Yui up. Of course Iroha could not avoid to put herself first anyway, as all of her “suggestions” to Yui are basically her plans to get Hachiman, and Komachi is very quick on the uptake as she understand what Iroha is trying to do even if they’ve just met few minutes ago.

========================= 7/15 Mrs. Yukinoshita (Marked spoilers) - The scene with Mrs. Yukinoshita it’s only 30 second long, and shorter compared to the novel, but I really like it. I still think that the brothers are not really fair with Yukino’s mom, which in my opinion have very little malice in her intentions. - We start with Yukino’s mom basically rattling her daughter’s cage with her usual methods. This is her final push for her daughter, as she test the resolve that she showed on the last meeting (happened in S3E11 just before the confession scene), and to the looks that she make it appears that she’s really pleased to see how this time Yukino act confident and is unfazed by her provocations. Imo this is what she always wanted for Yukino, while I’m wary to call her a kind mom, she really care for her daughter as she always tried to push her forward, even if her methods were questionable. It’s quite obvious the satisfaction in her face when Yukino reply with composure and determination, you can clearly see her lightly smiling when she pronounce her last phrase, which is ... - Mrs. Yukinoshita: “Well them let’s see how g00d you really are at this”. This is such a powerful phrase, you have to focus on one word: “really”. Meaning that the previous prom was not something that she considered a true test, this one is, now it’s the real deal, with all the odds stacked against her, now Yukino can “really” show what she’s capable of. As she smile while saying this, is quite obvious to me that she’s pleased by the resolve of her daughter, and she know very well from where that resolve came from… - Mrs. Yukinoshita: “Hikigaya-kun, this will be a lot of trouble for you, but please look after her.” She immediately move to Hachiman, say this phrase, and then leave him with a very bright smile that let him know that she fully knows what’s going on between him and Yukino. I would like to point out that this is only a confirmation because it was quite clear from the last episode that Mrs. Yukinoshita understood the dynamic between Hachiman and Yukino. While I cannot completely dismiss the bros interpretation of her having a personal agenda on Hachiman and her family business, I do think that’s more likely that very simply she’s at least as much happy for the end result: Yukino have finally found her identity and happyness, and all thanks to her newfound boyfriend which happen to be also very cunning and resourceful, so perfect both for her daughter and for her job. I don’t see how the mom couldn’t be happier for this result. - (funny/spoilers) In the anthologies, which we don’t know if are canon (but probably are) and happen after the end of the series, there’s a funny scene where Mrs. Yukinoshita realizes the danger posed by Yui and Iroha, and so she start to scheme on how to rope Hachiman in before something can happen. She immediately organize a meeting to present Hachiman to her husband, and at the same time demonstrate to Yukino how to take initiative and rope him in, all the while Yukino’s dad is watching as he start to feel sorry for this poor boy that he didn’t even met yet.

======================= 8/15 Shizuka Hiratsuka (No spoilers) - “Youth is both a lie and a form of evil” These are the words that Hachiman wrote in his essay, and the very first words that we hear at the start of series (S1E1). This is where everything begun, and the final straw that made Hiratsuka take the decision to force Hachiman to join the Service Club. A classic example of book-end. Of course this is meant to show to him how much he have grown because, even if he have not reached the final destination, he surely reached the biggest milestone in his life. This is also a nice demonstration of what she said to him back in S2E12: Hachiman: “I don’t feel like we’ve grown any” Hiratsuka: “People usually don’t look back to see how far they’ve come while they’re still walking.” - Hiratsuka: “empathy, intimacy, curiosity, compassion, respect, and envy… Harboring all of that and more toward just one girl… I’d say the word ‘love’ definitely doesn’t convey enough.” I love Hiratsuka, as she basically explain why Hachiman couldn’t simply say “I love you” to Yukino in the previous episode. - Hachiman: “That’s why I’ll always doubt it, all the same” Yet another callback, this time to his S2E10 monologue. The meaning is the same, if you want something genuine you’ll have to work for it on a day by day basis, you’ll have to build a bridge with the other person, in this case Yukino, and keep working on it, only if the both of them will actively try to maintain that bridge then it can be called genuine. - Hiratsuka: “It’s very far from correct, but that’s the perfect answer”. The “correct” way would be to live in a world where you could simply believe in others without any string attached, but that’s unrealistic, hence why Hachiman gave the perfect answer. This is not due to malice on any of the part involved, this is intrinsic of human nature, taking Hachiman and Yukino as example, they both fully trust each other, and they’ve come a long way into understanding each other, but you never reach the point where you can fully understand someone else, because you can not even fully understand yourself. So both of them will have to put effort in maintaining that relationship if they truly care for each other. It may sound a bad thing on a first glance, but it’s instead a very wonderful one, as every day they’ll show the love for each other through that effort. - Hachiman refuses to take Hiratsuka hand. I don’t really think I should explain this, so what I’m doing now is just indulging in my self-righteousness. Hachiman refuses Hiratsuka hand is meant to convey to her that now he have grown up and he won’t need her support anymore, as he can finally stand on his own. But then, after he got up, he grab her hand anyway, to demonstrate how grateful he is for all she have done for him. It’a beautiful mirror for the hand scene with Yukino outside the sauna, the difference is Yukino is the one he choose to give his life to, and she herself asked for it at the end of the previous episode. - Hachiman: “It’s so 10 years ago.” I admit I didn’t think to interpret this as Hachiman saying that he’s not a kid anymore, as the bros did, but I think is a valid interpretation. Other than that I can say that this mirror what Hachiman said in S2E8: “If I’d been born ten years earlier…”. Also as a funny note, recently the novel had his 10 years anniversary since Volume 1, so I won’t exclude this could be a meta joke from the author.

======================= 9/15 Epilogue (Marked spoilers) - Yukino: “I Love you, Hikigaya-kun.” For a fair bit of time I thought this phrase was just fan service, as it was not really needed because they basically had a marriage proposal on the previous episode, but then it occurred to me of its meaning besides fan service. We have to consider that the reason on why Hachiman took such a roundabout way to confess is not because he was shy, but because he doesn’t believe that words can convey his feelings (discussed in previous episode). So what Yukino is doing now is not merely a love declaration, is a display of trust in his understanding, she’s basically saying “Now I trust you enough that you will understand me even if I’m saying with only a simple word”. - After that the first opening, “Yukitoki”, start rolling as an insert song. It happened before in S2E10, but this time we finally hear the full song, with the additional 3rd verse. The song is basically from Yukino perspective, and hearing it in full is wonderful, as it basically narrates the whole story from start to finish. The surprising thing about it is to think that this was composed for the first series, a lot before than the novel series was even completed. On a side note, as much as I like Yukitoki, my favorite remains “diamond no Jundo – Yukino Ballade”. - Hachiman: “This better not mean that I’m gonna have to say something at point down the road.” This is the new challenge for you Hachiman, now you have to say it back to Yukino, and after that, there’s even a bigger challenge as you’ll also have to directly tell it to her mom and dad as well! But I would say that the fact the he acknowledges that he’ll have to, is yet another little step forward for him. - In the shot at the new class at the start of the school year, we can see that Hachiman’s seat is on the end of the class near the window, which is the standard and official anime protagonist seat! It’s a meta way to show us that he finally earned his status of romcom MC, even if in actuality as far as I’m concerned, he always was the most interesting protagonist. - It’s hilarious how Yukino was informed on all the possible plans that Hachiman could use to avoid the dinner with Yukino’s mom (In the novel’s Hachiman points out that he would love to go out and have dinner with Yukino, he just don’t want to meet the mom or Haruno). This scene is a further confirmation that her mom really took a liking to Hachiman, and I like it because it show how the two of them get more comfortable around each other as time passes. - I also would like to point out how now Yukino lives at home with her parents, If you think about it Yukino lived alone before, I feels this is like a jab to the standard anime trope of high schoolers living alone. [Spoiler from the Anthologies: Yukino is going to ask to live alone again to her father (even asking “please”, which she never did before), to such request her parents are puzzled, since there’s no reason to live alone anymore, until Haruno get the hint and explain teasingly “I cannot invite a certain person home if there’s my parents around, right?”, which trigger Yukino’s panic reaction!] - Yukino: ”We just came up with a convincing excuse to take over this room for now.” I’m honestly surprised the bros didn’t catch this phrase. Yukino “I never lie” Yukinoshita, the paladin herself, candidly admit that they just used an excuse to use the club room, so much that even Komachi is surprised as she says “Wow, that’s kind of underhanded!”. This scene is here to show us once again how much Yukino have grown thanks to Hachiman’s influence on her, as she’s not anymore confined in her black and white mentality. Something that the Yukino of old could never have done it. In a very clever way this scene is a mirror to what the marriage scene does for Hachiman at the start of the episode, as it serve the exact same purpose. - Of course the re-institution of the Service’s club is a scheme concocted by Komachi and Iroha, and a big part of the reason is to help Yui, but let’s not forget how both of them have vested interest in it as well. Iroha of course have everything to gain in keeping Hachiman close and want to avoid that he have too much time to be alone with Yukino, while Komachi, as Yui repeats multiple times in the novel, even if jokingly, is a “bad brocon”. The look that Hachiman give them after Yui enters the room make us understand that he realized that it’s those 2 who convinced Yui to come. - Yui final scene is the missing piece for the perfect ending. But even so the thing that caught the most my attention was Jacob’s reaction, as he was seemingly only mildly entertained in the last 2 episodes, and only got excited at this part. I totally do understand him as he’s a Yui shipper, still it made me think about many things about the story as a whole, and so I felt I had to write an additional section about Yui’s potential as the end girl. (See section 11).

================ 10/15 Small details - Hachiman: “I guess this is insta-worthy” I don’t think we should get this literally, as it probably means that Hachiman deem the occasion worth to take a picture as a memento. Hachiman and Yukino are not the type to use Instagram, and I can’t imagine them uploading online the picture of their first date, but if by any chance they actually do it I can already imagine that probably Yui, who uses socials a lot, would probably follow both of them… now I hope you’re getting where I wanna go with this… - Tamanawa and Kaori actually make another appearance in the novel, as Hachiman cleverly convince them to pay for almost all the expenses and then cleverly corner him into arranging a crowdfunding campaign, using his usual underhanded schemes, so much that Yukino even says: “You really would make for an amazing scam artist…” - Hachiman says to Hiratsuka: “I never danced properly”. You may be forgiven if you ask yourself if that’s true, given that he dances with Yui in S3E10, but as I said in the notes for that episode, back then the dance in the novel was different, because it wasn’t a couple dance as it’s depicted in the anime. So in the novel Hachiman is telling the truth, he never actually danced with someone before, but the little change made by the anime create this little plot hole. - The color on the shoes in the last scene tell us the years of the students: Green are third years, Red second years, Blue first year - By all accounts the Service club was gone, but as Yukino move to serve the tea, you can see that they still keep around Yui’s Mug! As they was hoping for her to come back. I love these little details.

======================== 11/15 Yui’s as endgirl? (a completely personal dissertion) Tldr answer: no, definitely not. Seeing Jacob desperately cling to Yui as a potential end girl made me think about many things. Let’s just start with the disclaimer that while I love both Yukino and Yui, there’s no way I can be unbiased here, as I prefer Yukino. I don’t think that anyone who love this story as much as I do can be unbiased, but none the less in all my notes up until now I tried very hard to not color what I wrote with my bias. But if there’s one thing that I won’t concede, is that the journey that this story depict transcend the shipper mentality, as every character have a very definite role to play in it. On the topic about the viability of Yui as an end girl I honestly feel that there was no possibility whatsoever, and I don’t mean that it couldn’t have happened, I mean that it would have defeated the purpose of what the story built over time. Please bear with me and let’s open a parenthesis: as a matter of fact there’s an alternative version which is a collection of short stories, titled “Oregairu Another”, dedicated to Yui, and it wasn’t really well received, nor is a very happy story. I’ve no proof but I’m pretty sure that it was more a commercial maneuver, by the author, by the editor, by the investors? I don’t know but it’s not relevant to this discussion. Oregairu have a lot of fans in Japan and I can deduce that is only normal that someone will want to milk the cow, and so enter “Oregairu Ketsu” which is a continuation of Oregairu Another, a full fledged novelization in 7 volumes centered on Yui as an alternate story. I won’t buy Ketsu because I don’t care about alternate routes, but someone for sure care. Closed parenthesis. The only reason as of why I talked about Ketsu is: there’s demand for Yui as an end girl, and I can understand that people will always have their own ship, so I won’t deny you or Jacob the possibility of shipping Yui in the slightest. But I humbly believe that Oregairu is not your typical romance where you have a favorite girl that you hope will win, instead is a journey of the growth for the characters. On every step of the story we’ve seen the characters struggle, as they stumble forward in the attempt to overcome their problems, and during this struggle is undeniable the role that the 3 main characters have, as each of them is necessary to reach the end goal. In this story we’ve seen their personality change as they interact with each other, but given each of their starting point, it’s no wonder why Hiratsuka picked Yukino as the first member of the Service Club. She had the most problems out of the three and I would argue that putting Hachiman in the same club afterwards was more a bet on her side that He would help Yukino more than the opposite (Hiratsuka even say it out loudly in S2E8). As Hiratsuka saw trough them, she knew that there always was a possibility that these two would end up as very close friends, maybe not in love, I won’t say that Hiratsuka saw this far, but surely their similarities were obvious to her. If you don’t believe me go re-watch S1E1 (well actually go re-watch the whole series once again from the start…), and notice how Hiratsuka feign to leave while she actually stays outside the room to eavesdrop on them. As I said, Imho, the bulk of the story is not centered around romance, but around growth, and I don’t know how to say in a very refined way but, on every step of the story, it was plainly obvious to anyone not blind that Hachiman never saw Yui in a romantic way. So for him to find his true self, his “genuine” self he had to reach his own truth, which could also have been to end up with only friendship and no romance, but I could not see any outcome where he suddenly start to see Yui in a romantic way unless, of course, the author would fall as low as other run of the mill romance stories where the end girl is just picked at random because the MC likes all of them (if that was the case then I won’t be here writing about Oregairu). To conclude, I do think that for Yui to become the end girl, it would have be needed for the whole story to be radically different from start to finish, probably even Hachiman himself should have been wrote as a very different character and have different past and motivations. If that was the case this would have been a different story, not necessarily bad, but surely not the story of the Hachiman we know and love. In this story the moment that Hachiman entered the service club room and met with Yukino, Yui had already lost.

======================= 12/15 A very biased take on Hachiman and Yukino relationship In the story Yukino was the first person that really made an impression on Hachiman since the moment they’ve met. In the very first episode he directly asked her if they could be friends, and after she rejected it he even tried again in the last episode of season 1 (S1E12). He never did it with anyone else. From her side Yukino opened up to Hachiman very quickly, it’s easy to forget how she started to talk about the relationship with her sister to Hachiman as soon as S1E6, and she even briefly talked with him about her family situation in S1E7 (The night in the woods). Hachiman literally did the impossible for Yukino, even when he wasn’t aware of it. Since his quest to search for the genuine began, in S2E8, his path was already set. He could have failed, be satisfied with a compromise, maybe because he could have felt that what he truly wanted was out of reach (does this remember you of something?), and it came very close to this conclusion (remember his inner monologue before Yukino and Yui in S2E8). This happens all the time in real life, and so it could have happened here, from this point of view any ending could have been still possible, but if you wanted to see the happy ending, then reaching his goal was the only possible way. His goal was to reach something genuine, meaning to finally be able to have that human connection that always eluded him, a connection with the people that meant a lot for him, and among those Yukino is the most important. As he himself says during his confession, their interaction changed both of the them in an irreversible way (see notes on the previous episode), since the moment they met he always felt the desire to be her friend (S1E1, S1E12), as he found their conversations so nice and fresh (S1E12). But of course love is not a one person affair, as 2 are needed. Unlike Hachiman, we cannot see Yukino’s thoughts, and this makes everything harder, but there’s a lot of hints along the way that point out how Yukino feels the same, so the only obstacle is their problems, those need to be fixed before anything can happen. I honestly think that Yukino had a serious doubt about Hachiman feelings, and probably thought that he liked Yui. I’m basing this assumption on her surprised reactions when she see Hachiman and Yui together (S2E10, S3E5, S3E7), and when she claims that she want to fulfill Yui’s wish (S3E7, S3E8, S3E10, S3E11). As Haruno says (S3E10) she came to the conclusion that she could never reach what she truly wanted, and so she settled for a compromise instead. We’ve come to a full circle, as I said above how settling for a compromise was the bad ending for Hachiman, and that’s why he cannot accept that outcome. Finally Hachiman realizes that following his desires is the only way to reach the genuine (thanks to Hiratsuka), that making Yui and Yukino swallow his lies was the total opposite of that, and that if he truly cared for them he needed to be honest, even if it meant to hurt them or get hurt in the process. In the end the only way to reach the genuine was to reject Yui, and to be open about his feelings about Yukino. If Yukino was not in love with and rejected him, the outcome would have be positive none the less, just less happy and satisfying for the viewer, but a rejection is not an inherently bad thing. If someone rejects you doesn’t mean that she doesn’t care for you. But of course Yukino really loved him for the longest of time by now, my guess is that she started to be conscious of him when they’ve gone on their first date (S1E6), and probably fell in love without realizing after the culture festival (S1E12), as that would explain why she was so mad when Hachiman gave the fake confession to Ebina in S2E2. During that fake confession Yui was more open about that, but we are never directly told about Yukino motivation, but I would argue that by that time she was already in love and didn’t realized it yet. I can conclude that if the story aimed to end in the happiest way possible for the reader, the Hachiman and Yukino ending was the only way to achieve that.

2023-05-19 07:37:43 ======================= 13/15 Novel’s Notes 1 (spoilers excerpts from the novel) This episode conclude Vol. 14, the last one for the main story. - In the novel we are narrated the aftermath of the confession of the previous episode from Hachiman himself, which is beautiful. As the two of them go back home almost without saying a word due to shyness, Hachiman is even contemplating to skip school for the next few days until: << Yesterday, after getting home, I shut myself in the shower and screamed at the top of my lungs against the sound of the spraying shower. Then, I immediately got under my covers and thrashed around in bed. If possible, I wanted nothing more than to take the next three years off, but still, even so— “See you tomorrow…” —The words she said wouldn’t leave my ears. … just before leaving, she lifted her hand like a beckoning cat to make a clumsy wave and told me those words in a meek voice. I really had no option but to go to school at that point. >> - The key of the club, conclusion: << She faced me and tossed the key, and I made sure to catch it in my hands. It was the first time I had ever held the key, and it was unsurprisingly metallic to the touch. However, she had been keeping this small key warm in her hand for all this time, and I could feel the remaining warmth in the palm of my hand. >> - Excuses to sit closer << Yukino: “It’ll be easier to talk this way…” She muttered with her eyes on the documents. Hachiman: “O-Oh, yeah, that’s true.” >> - A precious moment while Yukino read Hachiman’s proposal for the prom << Her long, glossy black hair would flutter with every nod and she would comb it with her hand and tuck it behind her ear. As she continued reading, her flushed earlobes gradually returned to normal. “At any rate, this proposal’s quite sloppy.” “Well, yeah. I didn’t have much time, and I was really desperate to get it done.” “Oh, you were desperate, huh?” She whispered happily. Then, she began marking the proposal with a red pen while humming. >> - Hachiman convincing himself to ask Yukino out on a date << Yeah, that’s true. We had a potential candidate, but whether it’d be actually usable or not was something we wouldn’t know unless we went to check. That means, we needed to do an inspection in person. Yukinoshita didn’t have a complete grasp on the details of the proposal yet, and I couldn’t make a g00d judgment call in regards to the minute numbers and feasibility of the location. Going separately wouldn’t amount to much. Therefore, it’d be efficient if the two of us were to go together. Since this was for work, it’s only natural that we prioritized efficiency. Okay. My excuses are locked and loaded. “D-Do you want to go take a look, then? It’s pretty close, and tomorrow’s a holiday, so…” But, as soon as the words came out of my mouth, my perfect excuses flew out the window, and my voice trailed off. >> - Hachiman recognize Yukino’s hairstyle from S1E6 << After letting out a big sigh, she removed her beret and undid the ties that bundled her hair into two. She placed the ties in her mouth and carefully used her hands to straighten her hair. After tying it into two bundles again, she checked her appearance with a hand mirror. A sense of nostalgia visited me as I watched her. She’s wearing a hat this time, but her hairstyle’s just a little different… Those were my initial thoughts, but I realized she was sporting the same hairstyle she had back when I went out with Komachi. Twintails. >> - Yukino subtly trying to convince Hachiman to go to the same university << Yukino: “The places you’re applying to mostly have campuses in Tokyo, after all.” Hachiman: “How the heck do you know even know that? Scary…” I didn’t even know where I was applying yet. Why did she say it like it was so obvious…? When my honest opinion slipped out of my mouth, she pouted. “It’s not difficult to figure out when you have grades similar to mine.” “Well, the careers we’re pursuing are similar to some degree.” “Right… So, we may end up going to the same university.” >> This will be exapanded in Vol 14.5 in a lovely scene they have at the cafe while searching for cram schools. - And she even have plans for after university << I turned and made eye contact with Yukinoshita. Hachiman: “But I think I’ll come back here one day. I really do like it here, and it feels like the place where I belong.” Yukino: “I see, I’m glad to hear that.” She resumed treading on the sand, smiling. Only this time, her steps were lighter, and her strides shorter. In taking a few steps ahead of me, she turned around. “You really do like Chiba, don’t you?” “Yeah…” Whether she understood the implications of her statement or not, who could tell? She made a teasing smile as if poking fun at that, and I could only return with a wry smile. We engraved our footprints side by side in the sand. >> Remember that Yukino aim to enters the diet of Chiba prefecture (her father’s job), so she hopes that the both of them could remain in Chiba together, that’s the “implications of her statement”. In Vol 14.5 she’ll even directly ask if Hachiman want to work for them… - As Hachiman ropes in the game creation club we see how much Yukino is changed << Yukinoshita stood up. “Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Yukinoshita. I apologize for any trouble Hikigaya-kun may have caused you. Thank you, and I look forward to working with you all.” She made a courteous bow, greeted them politely, and wore a faint, but noble smile. She looked far gentler, completely unthinkable from how she used to be. >> As a funny note Yukino totally doesn’t remember them even if they meet already in the past at the two clubs squared one against the other in a $trip card game, that time Yukino treated them very harshly (see Novel’s notes on S1E6 and S3E6 for more info).

2023-05-19 07:37:44 ======================= 14/15 Novel’s Notes 2 (spoilers from Vol 14 and 14.5) - Yumiko is a tsundere << Coming from the direction she was heading was Miura. She was twirling her wavy and dangling golden hair with her fingertips in displeasure. After walking over to us, she exhaled and asked, “Do you mind if we grab something to eat?” “N-No.” Yukinoshita answered, surprised by her sudden request. Even after getting permission, she took a moment to observe Yukinoshita and me. Then, she quickly removed her gaze and looked at Isshiki. “You want to come, too?” “Wha? Uh, well, I don’t know about that…” … I had an idea of the reason why Miura had that attitude. She didn’t say or ask anything, but she was likely being considerate. Not to me, but to the three of us. She really is a g00d person… Miura took Isshiki to the entrance of the conference room. Waiting for them at the door was Yuigahama, Ebina-san, and Kawasaki. The three of them were wondering where to go, and Zaimokuza and the two UG Club members were also there. It looked like the three glasses boys were invited, too. She really is a g00d person… >> As Miura takes everyone to eat, she give Hachiman and Yukino a chance to be alone << As I watched the door with my cheek in my hand, I felt a slight tap on my upper arm. It was such a delicate touch it had me feeling extremely ticklish, but I still ended up flinching from the surprise. I made a sidelong glance to see Yukinoshita making a shy smile. “Why don’t we go get something to eat, too?” “g00d idea…” I answered, and we both rose from our seats. >> - This time Yukino accept offer from Hachiman and the others << Hachiman: “Wait, you’re doing the same thing, aren’t you? Anyway, give me some of your work before you hit your limit,” I said, sounding slightly strict. She stopped for a moment and hung her head to reflect on her behavior. Unexpectedly, she became docile and nodded. “Okay…” “Um, ‘okay…’?” She’s really tired. Her linguistic ability was fading. “You okay? Things are looking kinda bad, aren’t they?” “Yes, they are. I honestly don’t know if we’re going to make it. This is bad. I could die a little.” >> - The closure for Hayama Hayato. During the sauna scene Tobe come up with a game of elimination where when someone say something related to heat will lose and have to leave the sauna. In the end only Hachiman and Hayato are left, and Hayato take this chance to ask Hachiman directly about he and Yukino: << Hayama opened his mouth. “So, what’s the truth?” His words were smooth, yet there was a pressure to them that pricked my skin. The muscles on his back were suggesting he had no intention of moving until I responded. “It’s nothing like that… if anything, it’s nowhere near that,” I said, sighing. Hayama’s body twitched. Then, he burst into laughter and held his stomach. After a few moments, he let out a deep breath and stood up. He turned half of his body to me and grinned, wearing a smile that was refreshing in appearance but interlaced with irony. “Sure is hot…” He stated coolly, and calmly left the sauna. >> In the end Hayato says “Sure is hot…” losing the game, which is his way of finally admitting defeat to Hachiman (remember what he said in S2E11), which means that he finally acknowledge Hachiman as his equal and at the same time lift him from the burden of his past failure with Yukino. Now Hayato is finally able to move forward. - The scene when Hachiman offer Yukino his hands is probably my favourite << Before she could, I offered my hand without a word. She tilted her head slightly, unsure of the meaning of my gesture, but she immediately made a faint smile. “I can stand up on my own…” “I know.” I knew she could stand on her own, and I knew she would say that. But even so, I offered my hand. And I would probably continue to do so from now on. Moments before disappearing, the evening glow radiated even stronger and deepened the shadows as it stretched farther. Both her shadow and my shadow became one, and no one could distinguish whose shadow was whose. In the world encased in vermilion, the color that dyed my face, her cheeks, and everything in its hue, she took my hand with an astonished smile. >> - Komachi show Hachiman photos to Yui and Iroha << Yui: “Umm, Komachi-chan's a really bad brocon.” Komachi: “Of course. Just who do you think has loved him for the past 15 years? Back then, he was just the most adorable little thing...” Komachi-chan pounded her chest and took out her smartphone. It looked like she was going to show us some photos. “Oh, I wanna see.” Iroha: “Bleh... Can't say I'm interested, but I guess I'll take a look, too.” >> of course Iroha is just pretending to be disinterested, as always. - Haruno have one last moment of fun as she makes Yukino jealous << Haruno: “G0d, you're so adorable, Hikigaya-kun... I'll make sure to dote on you as much as I do with Yukino-chan from now on.” … As if making that evident, she made an alluring chuckle near my ear. I found myself writhing, and when my body came in light contact with her exposed skin, her sweet breaths that tickled my earlobe, and her floral aroma that stimulated my nose caused my back to shiver. Oh no, this person really is scary... As I shuddered in place, Yukinoshita promptly came in between us and slapped Haruno-san's hand. Then, she pointed outside with her index finger. “Nee-san, the restaurant's over there.” “Oh dear, someone's upset. I'll see you two later.” Haruno-san feigned innocence and waved her hands. >> - Hachiman explain the relationship within the Yukinoshita’s family << Some time ago, Haruno-san once said this: The existence of an enemy would cause people to grow. I had a slight suspicion before, but it's now turned into something definite. For the mother and daughter, or even the siblings, confronting each other was their form of communication, and opposing each other was their idea of education. What's with this rakshasa family? Could it be their entire family is full of troublesome people? >> Btw Hachiman here is referencing of what Haruno said to him in S1E11, after he pulled out one of his schemes against Sagami. - In volume 14,5 Yukino is finally able to give Hachiman her cookies directly (remember she failed in S2E13) as a celebration of their 1 month anniversary together, and when he say he didn’t prepared anything for her she reply that then he would have to give her something on their 10 years anniversary!

======================= 14/15 Novel’s Notes 2 (spoilers from Vol 14 and 14.5) - Yumiko is a tsundere << Coming from the direction she was heading was Miura. ===================== 15/ Closing Words And so it ends, my personal favorite story of all time, which may be embarrassing coming from an old man, but I won’t lie on what I like. So much time have passed, I started watching Mazinger on TV when I was a kid, then read my first book, the trilogy of Lord of The Rings, when I was fourteen. Since then I’ve read a lot, classics, mangas and light novels alike, and still Oregairu is the one that have the number one spot in my heart. It’s not a matter of what is better, that’s why I refuse to give scores, it’s a matter of what you enjoy, and this is what I enjoyed the most. A year as passed since the anime ended, and even more since the novel ended, and I still miss it like if it was yesterday. I swear I recovered faster from heartbreak than this! I hope that I have helped at least someone to enjoy this story at least a fraction of how much I do. Maybe we’ll have another chance to talk again about Oregairu in the future, maybe when the OAV lands, until then I want to give a thank the bros for their reaction on this series and a thank to everyone who was with me on this journey.

something that i like that you didn't mention during the hiratsuka szene is that, when Hachiman said goodbye he only said "Sayonara Sensei". I like to interprate that as him only saying goodbye to her in the capacity of being his teacher but not to her as a person. I firmly believe that they will, in the future, regularly meetup at the batting cages or for ramen and just hang out and talk about life etc. Hachiman no longer has a need for a mentor but he can still be friends with her, and they might even retain something of a brother-sister-relationship.

This is the first time I've watched the whole series in chronological order. Post-Oregairu depression? Time to watch some Toradora.

Te recomiendo uno de estos Toradora, Sakurasou no pet na kanojo, golden time, Charlotte, Plastic Memories y un extra que me gustaria que vieras Re:Zero

Lukas

As much as i like Toradora, the Light novel ending is just a lot better.

Thank you for the journey, no worries, they weren't in debt. Since the Anime had to cut pretty much the "joint" part of the prom to save time, they just made that up. Kaihin paid for it + crowdfuning
