Until the very last moment I expected them to somehow backpedal Kaede's disappearance by showing some traces of her remaining within the original Kaede. But no. She was a defense mechanism for dealing with trauma. Her disappearance, however sad, is a good thing.

That Kaede arc hit me so hard! I couldnt watch any other show for weeks (the movie wasnt out yet at the time…) I’m glad you like it! Now i just wait patiently for the movie reaction… 👀

I honestly really don't know why they don't kiss in the anime. I've heard that they had kissed multliple times by that point in the light novel. Especially in this final episode I don't really understand the reasoning behind not having a kiss
