A bit of relevant Japanese folklore: Hiruko is the name of a deity in the Japanese creation mythology. He was the deformed firstborn child of the gods Izanagi and Izanami (creators of the islands of Japan) and was cast into the sea in a boat of reeds. He eventually washed ashore and became the god Ebisu, the Japanese god of fishermen and luck. In some communities, Ebisu is also associated with objects that drift ashore, and with large sea animals such as whales and whale sharks.
