If you need to balance all the heavy stuff with a lighthearted show that's impossible to watch without smiling, there's always Laid Back Camp. Season 3 starts tomorrow! https://www.crunchyroll.com/series/GRWEW95KR/laid-back-camp

The song that plays while Rem is telling Subaru why she loves him is called "Wishing." It's performed in character by Rem's VA Inori Minase. Definitely worth a listen, and you should look up the lyrics if you do.

"He can't use a sword. He can't use magic. He does not have the wit or the physical strength to win in a fight. So this is a story about someone who, when pressed on all sides, uses only his inability to give up as a weapon. So it is a story about not giving up" - The author's note on Subaru in the afterword of the first Re:Zero novel. I love this episode for so so many reasons, but mainly because it is the nexus of who Subaru is and who he will become. Subaru hates himself, had endured trauma after trauma, has been completely isolated from his home, and has been made to feel more worthless than he already felt. Even still, he could not fully give up. He wanted Rem in that moment to run away with him, to give him a reason to give up. Of course she couldn't because this aspect of his character is exactly what made her fall in love with him and saved her in the first place. He could have given up on Emilia in the capital, could have given up on befriending Ram and Rem, could have taken money from Roswaal and ran, and could have given up on saving the children of Arlam and Rem from the mabeasts. But of course, he can't. He is unable to give up on himself (though he might REALLY want to) or the ones he cares about. Return by Death is that inability to give-up made manifest. The consequences and rewards of this trait and his power is part of what makes him such an interesting character.

Oh man... If you've ever struggled with feeling worthless, self-hatred or that you have no direction in life, the first half of this episode cuts DEEP. I cried my eyes out the first time I watched it. As someone who is subconciously stoic about most real-life situations it was like years of pent up feelings all came forward at once. The episode is also a nice reminder that even if you feel that way about yourself, people around you don't see you in the same negative light. This might sound like a shallow and empty promise but if anyone reading this is someone that struggles with thoughts like this, follow the moral of the story and never give up, it gets better. There are people around you who care! <3

From his mentioning of his previous life, Subaru has felt this way about himself for a long time. His life in this new world was supposed to be an escape for him but the world has done nothing but forced him to confront reality over and over. You can't just run away from your own problems, eventually you'll need to face them and overcome them. With how strongly Subaru hates himself and thinks of himself as unworthy useless trash.. it recontextualizes his actions up til now and Why he is the way he is. He tries so hard to be liked, to be strong and reliable. Why he tries too hard to be the hero. Its because he hates himself, he thinks he can't do it, will fail and give up.. yet is Constantly trying to prove those thoughts wrong. It doesn't justify him being an asshole and hurting the people he cares about with his selfish choices which he has finally accepted and decided to try and change. Starting over From Zero. This is what Re:Zero is about. Not some shallow wish fulfilment.. but its a call to confront reality instead of escaping it. To never give up on yourself. Its a story of overcoming life's never ending cycle of suffering and failure by learning from your mistakes and having the strength to change. Also to listen to the people around you and to reach out for help no matter how much you think you can't. You Always CAN seek help and rely on others. I mean look at how much Rem's declaration of love and support has done to Subaru. Subaru is an idiot but he definitely is capable of being intelligent and thinking his actions through. He was always capable of this, he just didn't believe in himself. See how much Subaru was able to achieve this episode, and all it took was having someone show you with all their heart they believe in you.

The conversation between Rem and Subaru is the single best i've seen in an anime. The raw emotion showed by Subaru, and Rem's responses are exactoy what was needed for the story to advance.

Off topic but, looking forward to the P3R ending vod. I see that Makoto joined Joker and Akechi in the back

I just watched half of this but I get the feeling that Alana does not like Subaru as much as this show wants you to like him. And that is totally valid.
