TL;DR - youtube removes creators' ability to opt out of pre- and post-roll ads. i rely on adsense $$, but never include mid- or post-roll ads in my vids. what should I do ??

hiya everyone,

i got a pretty upsetting update from youtube today. they told us that starting in november, creators will no longer have a choice about placing pre and post roll ads on videos. it will be mandatory that all videos have both. they literally said we are "simplifying the ad choices" by "removing the individual ad choices". yeah...........ok................

i never have mid or post-roll ads on! because people are trying to sleep and relax and don't want ads blasted in their ears !!!! i don't make much money from YouTube ads, but even tho it is a small amount, it still helps me out a ton. i am aware that if i loaded my videos with ads and promotions, my channel might be more profitable. youtube would probably even push it more in the algorithm. but i never want my channel to feel like a commercial, i just want it to be a nice place to chill and sleep. i started posting my ASMR vids purely out of love and as a fun hobby - i don't want to lose that just because it turned into my career.

these changes won't affect you if you have youtube premium or use adblocker. & i'm surely not gonna tell y'all not to use adblockers. i don't like watching ads myself (that's why i'm grateful for those people who stick through the pre-roll ads LOL)!

does anyone have any thoughts or advice on this ? i'm worried this is really going to affect my channel. people will not want to watch ASMR with annoying ads, at least i wouldn't. am i overthinking it? does this seem like a problem to y'all ??

seems like a big change to me, so i'd appreciate hearing what your reactions are.

Ugh, of course YouTube have to ruin everyone's fun. This really sucks, and I'm sorry you have to deal with it as a creator. There's a few unrelated channels I like to watch that start every video by saying "I don't do ads, if you see ads they're not from me, if you want to support me please use Patreon". I know that these channels have been doing such since before this new update to the ad thingy as a kind of moral stance, but perhaps that might be the best way to go forward for you for now, especially if doing so lets you somehow block mid-video ads. I know it's not an ideal solution, but it may be a good place to start until a better one comes up, even if you just add a line explaining that in the descriptions of your videos. Maybe there could be some kind of mass creator blowback that gives you all some small piece of control back in the near future? TLDR: A simple notice or statement at the start of videos saying you didn't and don't put ads in the videos might be a good short-term fix until a better option comes up.
