Sunny Side

Yup, I assume LA as well; the signs are in English and the atmosphere of the location is 'southwest coastal city' I feel like the album is rather cohesive. Very youthful, living in the moment for enjoyment (Homeboy, Run, Sunny Side) but also in the sense of carpe diem (Do or Die, Koong, Skater [though Skater could be both]) So thinking about their story, just going off the music and mvs because I am so far behind on their content -- I would guess that they're on a precipice, facing a big decision, perhaps like the traditional threshold of the Hero's Journey. Treasure the moments you have, because you're about to transform into something new

Interesting. I know kpop groups have their universes that they craft stories around, and especially with BTS, I've become familiar with planning out entire series of albums as a way to tell a story. I hadn't really thought of it in that traditional plot device way, though. That point in a novel in which the hero faces information that changes life's trajectory is a tried and true facet of any, if not all, stories.

A story probably wouldn't have much tension without conflict or at least complications. Though I'll walk that back a bit, because different cultures of course have different traditions for their stories. Some years ago, after I'd learned a bunch about story structure and was very enthusiastic about it, I was chatting with a French author in a Discord writing group. He was telling me about a short story he was writing and how he was struggling with his protagonist. She was too passive, iirc, just going along deeper into the evil wood, etc, etc. I think I tried to make the case that there needed to be progressive complications and conflict, and he kept repeating that it wasn't "that sort of story". (And having beta read another of his short stories, I can vouch for that - it was a sort of horror story where the protag just got pulled along by events. And this guy is an award winning children's author otherwise! It's like how romance author Nora Roberts has her JD Robb alter ego to write crime novels) My point being: I may or may not be on to something, applying a western story structure (albeit sourced from ancient Mediterranean cultures) lens on something being created by an Asian culture (albeit for global consumption). It's complicated! BTW, I just watched Andy and Jas' reaction to xikers' Sunny Side video. I hadn't noticed that the guys' outfits in Sunny Side are sometimes the same as they had on for the interview -- looks like the guys were shooting the video on the same day as the interview! Some of the shots were even in the parking lot of the place they did the interview

I hadn't noticed the same outfits either. Crazy. I wonder if they let Andy and Jas in on the good news. I'm sure they did if they were filming in the parking lot. That's awesome. And yeah, stories are different all around the world. I've edited for authors from a number of different countries, and let's just say that the story progression and plot seems "off" to me as a western consumer of literature. Definitely not the kind of stuff I would pick up and read in my free time, but it's popular literature in their home countries. Different expectations and cultural history, for sure.
