Due to government contracts, the (traditionally dwarven) members of the great Powder Guilds, those organizations authorized to research and develop mechanical firearms, are also utilized as a well-trained militia, often requiring mandatory service escorting the great Trade Fleets trawling the great Archipelago. This leaves many guild members with first-hand combat experience, and some will stay within the military branch of the guilds, choosing the life of an Artillerist over that of an Artisan. They serve with a deep understanding of their craft, burning to further hone their skills as combat engineers, demolition specialists or expert marksmen.
