As an Australian I've always found this film cringey. Its embarrassingly 80s, and they really lean into the ignorant country bumpkin angle. US culture permeates Australia. Even in the 80s it would be extremely difficult to find someone so clueless about basic things. This movie was a lot of North American's only reference for Australia and so we're all considered country bumpkins who drink fosters and don't understand escalators. Looking past all that its a fairly standard love story. Reminds me of Rocky.

Mate, chill. He's an exaggerated caricature, sure - but it's not like you couldn't find people out in the sticks just as bumpkin as that. Especially in the 70s/80s! The film makes it very clear just how remote and tiny "Walkabout Creek" is. You'd have to be pretty silly to think that someone from any of the cities, or even decent sized towns, would be like that. That's like assuming all Americans are like the hillbillies in Deliverance. I was - am - a lot more annoyed about the "Throw another shrimp on the barbie" ads ;)

Wow, that's the most cancerous thumbnail yet!

i'm in illinois, USA, but i have seen a few great australian movies, the road warrior is awesome. also the castle is pretty funny, and even less big films like the tunnel and on the beach movies. can anyone recommend any cool science fiction movies from australia?

also i heard paul hogan and his wife linda from the movie had a really bad public divorce in australia, so i guess the love really didn't last. also i recommend the documentary NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD about australian film industry, anyone else seen that?

Magnificent Gojira

Hartley's film is great and hilarious. I've seen most of the films mentioned there and must say that great chunk of them is really worthwhile
