Episode 9 with Beard is basically entirely made up of movie references. The fight between Beard and Jamie's dad was A Clockwork Orange thing for instance.

I also didn't really enjoy the Beard After Hours episode when I first saw it, the whole episode is an homage to the 1985 Scorsese film After Hours and this episode is better for me after having watched that film!

It's been years since I've seen Clockwork Orange but holy shit, I still should have picked up on that, given what an iconic shot that is in the movie. And James Tartt's cronies are definitely droogs.

So it's known that Apple/Warner asked the writers for 2 more episodes. My theory based on nothing is that the writers maybe didn't appreciate that and as a result turned in the Christmas ep and the Beard one. They used the Beard ep to do something completely out of left field. Personally I like this episode more than the Christmas one. What better way to develop the Beard character than with the oddest story of the whole series so far.

BeardAfter Dark IS weird. But I kinda liked it. The big Blue Moons are likely a nod to Man City having Blue Moon as their club theme. The rest of the madness, though, I can't easily explain.

In case no one has already mentioned this, there's a 1985 Martin Scorsese movie called "After Hours", in which the main character (played by Griffin Dunne) meets a cute/slightly off woman (Rosanna Arquette) in a diner after work one night. She writes her number in a book he's reading, and after he goes back to his apartment, he decides to give her a call. So begins his surreal journey into late night '80s NYC/Soho where he spends most of the movie just. trying. to. get. home. It's a wonderfully bent movie full of odd, mostly harmless characters...nothing like any other Scorsese movie I can think of. One of my favorites.

George and Simone do you both not recall rooting for Ted and Rebecca to hook up? Rebecca's ted's boss.
