MrBallen did a video about the events that inspired Scream as did as a few other youtuber true crime folk. it was a real life serial killer in Florida that killed a bunch of college students. The Gainsville Ripper(had to look up his real name, Daniel Rolling). I believe it was more the atmosphere that the killer created in the community that inspired the screenplay rather than how he actually killed his victims, but he did stab his victims to death and he did some other stuff I won't go into detail about that could be similarish. guy was an absolutely horrible evil being. Also the way they promoted the movie was such a great idea. Drew Barrymore was going to be the lead and it was going to be the type of slasher people expected. Drew being the front and center of the poster and the big part of the trailer, then 5 minutes in...boom she's dead. saw this movie multiple times in the theater. that reaction from the audience was worth the price of admission. Got the VHS the day it came out. And I wasn't even a big slasher or horror fan, usually was led to watch them with all my friends at sleepovers late at night when the parents went to bed. Scream was just so different. Also, pretty much all the Scream movies are worth the watch, especially after 3(3 was the low point, but I enjoy it more going back and watching it now that I don't have the high expectations I had after 1 and 2). But watching a few other popular 80s slashers will add to the references and stuff. The in universe lore for this series grows pretty big. Tatum opened the garage door to cut on the light. there isn't a visible switch for the light and when you open the door it cuts on the light for the garage door motor for a minute or so.

Lol you guys missed that the guy screaming "Jamie, he's behind you" is, in fact, Jamie Kennedy

By the time Scream came out horror movies weren't very popular. They were cliche and tired and with the rise of CGI and higher budget blockbusters many fell flat. Wes Craven wanted to update horror movies and had some success with Wes Craven's New Nightmare a couple of years before Scream. This was updating Nightmare on Elm Street and was fairly successful, but still seemed to be a last gasp of a dying genre. This is why I think Scream really works. Wes turned the genre on it's head. It played into the tropes and cliches and did something new. It let audiences feel like they solved the puzzle only to flip it and then flip it again. "Oh the Boyfriends the killer, obviously." oh he didn't do it... "oh the boyfriends the killer obviously" oh he's just been killed... "oh wait the boyfriend IS the killer. It's very self aware and knows that you know all tricks and it doesn't shy away from thos tricks and puts them out there for all to see and yet still keeps you guessing until the end.

Answering the question on Scary movie... With Scary Movie I would say the same thing I'd say to most parody movies. You'll only get 80% to 90% of the jokes and you'll be lucky if half are actually funny and that's ok! Scary Movie started a trend and anything after Scary Movie 2 is awful, but in terms of referencing other films there are many you likely wouldn't have seen. I'll post the movies it pardodies below: I Know What You Did Last Summer - Main Parody and itself is a really good film. You should see this before watching it. Scream - Main parody as well Scream 2 Scream 3 The 6th Sense - I don't know if you have seen this, but this film doesn't spoil anything. You'd just likely not get the reference and move on. The Blair With Project - This film is terrible and the parody is gross. I wouldn't bother watching this film, but it did start the trend of shakey cam low budget films that led to films like Paranormal Activity so there is that... Halloween - I mean you can't have a parody without the scream queen classic Friday the 13th - Personal favourite of the main horror franchises, you've seen this one anyway :) The Shining - It doesn't spoil this movie so if you don't watch this first you'll just get the reference when you do. The Matrix - So. Many. Films. did bullet time, because of the matrix. This movie does too. It's so fucking funny though. Like the killer in Scary Movie and the way they move is hillarious. Doesn't spoil the Matrix though. The Usual Suspects - I would say if you haven't seen this watch it first. While the reference without context wouldn't spoil the movie, the part it does parody is such a huge cinema moment it'd be a crime not to see how it was done first. Psycho - The reference is from near the start of the film if i remember correctly, but for how Psycho starts this moment was quite a surprise and again it'd be a shame not to see it done the original way. Candyman - I don't recall the reference, but this film is one of the only horror films that creeps me out just thinking about it. It's such a great film.

Nice post...but I'd have to strongly disagree on The Blair Witch Project... I get that it is a very polarizing film...some hate it but also many do love it...I respect if you feel like it is terrible but hope you realize and can acknowledge many do not feel that way (myself included)... I've never requested because I acknowledge it isn't the best film to watch on streaming...but it was a wonderfully fun shared experience in the cinema. I also felt Paranormal Activity was such fun as a shared experience in the cinema and less so on streaming but it is what it is.

I feel like I need to send Wes Craven a Christmas card this year just for the gift he gave us of Simone' face after the last jump scare. I haven't laughed that hard in a good while. That face needs to go into the dictionary next to "f--- right off". ;)

This is my favorite horror movie franchise by far! Most horror movie franchises them have a good amount of stinkers or ones that I would skip, but this one is so fucking solid. Even the lesser films of this franchise are still solid fun movies. Even the new ones! My favorites are probably 1,2, & 5 but honestly I like all of them!
