The original order for season 1 was 9 episodes, which was cut to 7 when the writer's strike happened (7 was the number that had already been filmed at the time). It had already been green-lit for season 2 at that time. In the 4 months they had off they threw out most of the story that would have ended S1, and they also broke the entire story of S2 (including the pre-credits sequences with the pink bear). Season 2 picked up a lot of viewers over season 1, and so S3 was approved just a few weeks after the premier. Beginning with S3, Gilligan and his writing team began to move more slowly and leave more to chance. They were known for writing themselves into tight corners that would require brainstorming sessions to extract themselves from. Critics' ratings continued to improve but rating simply held steady from S2. AMC threatened to cancel the show after S3, as it was expensive to produce. The producers began shopping the show to other networks, and incoming offers were strong enough that AMC backed down and approved S4. Between seasons the first 3 seasons were released on Netflix -- many non-watchers who were familiar with the show through word-of-mouth binged it that summer, leading to S4's ratings improving significantly.

Wanting Walt to succeed but also reminding yourself that he is a bad guy is the duality of this show. Lol also I've been having a ton of fun rewatching this. I only watched it the one time so watching it again with y'all knowing where this show goes is great. (Also the song at the start of episode 7 is called a narcocorrido, it's a song about the cartel or other drug related things. haha)

Walt is an antihero, much in the same vein as Tony Soprano in Sopranos, which is the best show ever IMO. But yeah, a lot of people really supported Walt, thought he was really cool, but hated Skyler. I think a big part of that is on the writing, Sopranos didn't have that same problem. It's still the issue of grappling with the fact that Walt is a bad guy but we also want him to succeed because he's the main character.

Ep 6 Cucu one of my favorites you start to see the real faces of Walt and Jesse

Walt may have started out appearing as an anti-hero, but Tony was always a stone villain who the show humanized. Neither is an anti-hero.

A bit of tv history: as far as I know, Babylon 5 (1993-1998) was the first US show that had a five-season arc planned. Not just "we'll make five seasons", but it was written as a novel for television. The main writer/showrunner had his secret notes and contingency plans (e.g., "what if this actor leaves the show) ready from 1987, maybe. It was a really risky affair, as never before had an American scifi show not called Star Trek managed to run more than a season or two. They pulled it off and when it works, it works beautifully. From the very start, they foreshadow stuff that isn't revealed until dozens of episodes later. But when they thought they wouldn't get season 5, they had to rush season 4 somewhat to reach a point in the story that would make do for an ending. That makes the part of the arc planned for S5 feel sluggish. Because it was planned out as a five-season story, they refused to make season 6. SO MANY things can go wrong in a project like that, that I'm not surprised that it isn't done more often. Mr. Robot (40 episodes over four seasons, IIRC), I believe, was also planned as a cohesive whole. Highly recommended.

Sorry guys, but did you think perhaps Gretchen still didn't drop the dime on Walt over the money because part of her knows he's right about their past?
