Bateman is fascinated by music because it makes him feel something, in the beginning he said he was just a mask but underneath he did not exist, he is not really there. The music makes him "be there" I suppose, but its not enough so he murders to feel present and alive.

She often gets that look when an animal gets "harmed" for the sake of the story. No matter the genre. I remember that look when Jack Black drop kicks Baxter of the bridge in Anchorman. Thank goodness he comes back at the end to save the day.

A little late on commenting on this one, but there was an aspect you nailed without realizing it: When you commented that it was like Patrick was "reading off Wikipedia" about the music, you were actually very close. During his Whitney Houston rambling, he's actually quoting the linear notes on the inside of the album sleeve. He has no idea how to actually talk to people. All he can do is an impression of it. And the only reason he can do it is by studying what other people say - people smarter than he is, and more eloquent. It's all a façade to make himself look better. Because if we learn one thing from this movie, it's that image is everything. Because for Patrick, that's all there is: Image. After all, he's just...not...there.

The lobbies of the building and all the similarity of the office spaces. is because this movie is firmly placed at the old World Trade Center towers. Apart from the electronics and music, one of those movies that became a time capsule now. I've seen a comprehensive comparison with the short novel as well and believe one of the main themes is immunity and anonymous power of the most wealthy, they (the yuppies so to speak) are all carbon copies of each other, trying to only beat each other's vanity and self-image while leaving personality or humanity behind. Also, what for Patrick Bateman is murder, fantasy or not, if you think of what the rich and powerful do all day, it is ignoring humanity when firing people and taking from everyone beneath them.
