Somebody just pointed out to me that since 2001 7,000 Americans in the military have been killed in combat while 30,000 have died by suicide. That's why Maverick is a movie about PTSD. PTSD has killed more people in the U.S. Military than any nation or terrorist organization since 2001. The dedication at the end to Tony Scott, who wasn't in the military but he also died from suicide, emphasized the coda of the song being played. The survivor's remorse by Maverick over Goose was used very effectively in keeping PTSD in focus. Both Top Gun movies are used to recruit people into the U.S. Military. The U.S. Department of Defense had final say in how they were portrayed in both movies. It's worth noticing that the first movie was used to assure the American public during peace that the U.S. Military would be dominant in war. The second movie is used to recruit people by promoting the military community, which is their primary weapon for defeating PTSD.

I wish they would write Penny in better. You kind of need to read about it before watching as most people won't remember that line about him doing fly by's with admiral's daughter :) But Jennifer Connelly was perfect in this one. Also, Val Kilmer couldn't talk at all, so they digitally constructed his lines from fragments of his speech from other movies.
