The other issue is the infamous "spider walk" scene. (You're not alone -- it still creeps me out, too, and I'm in my late 50s.) Friedkin always felt that scene didn't fit at that point. Two reasons: First, as Regan's appearance and behavior gradually worsened, the film’s tension gradually increased. Friedkin felt the 'spider walk' broke that slow ramping up of tension -- it was too big a jump on the horrid scale. I think he’s right about this. Second, a moment before the shock of the spider walk was the shocking news of Burke’s death. Friedkin felt the two shocks were too close together; they diluted each other. I feel he's wrong about this, however. Yes, it’s unorthodox to deliver a second shock immediately after the first. But the fact that it’s unorthodox works in its favor. We’ve all experienced shocks in movie plots before, but almost always they come one at a time, each followed by an easing of tension. So after we hear of Burke’s death, we’re TOTALLY unprepared for the spider walk. Which makes it even more shocking. (Of course, the increased shockingnessiositude makes the problematically problematic problem in the previous paragraph even more problematical in its problematicism.)

My understanding of why the spider walk scene was cut in the theatrical version was always that it didn't really work as a special effect. The stunt person was hanging on wires, and there was no way for them not to be seen until they could be removed digitally.

Do watch Exorcist 3 as well! Written and directed by the original author, William peter Blatty so he had artistic autonomy. Stop no. 2 though yuk.
