Well not film but Matthew Modine is "Papa", Dr. Brenner, in Stranger Things. Some have mentioned that R Lee Ermey, the Drill Instructor, was an actual Marine Corps DI during the Vietnam War, not sure though if anyone has mentioned that he was not originally cast as the DI, the actor playing the helicopter gunner (who was also a former Marine) was originally cast in that role but R Lee Ermey convinced Kubrick to give him the part and the rest is history. Yeah two scenes still get me, no matter how many times I watch this movie, Leonard's crying after the blanket party, and the damn sniper girl looking at me/us and pleading for me/us to shoot her. One thing you have to respect about this movie even if you can't love it, it doesn't sugar coat anything about modern war or the military. I can't help it, so compelled to recommend other Vietnam movies I just gotta: Platoon (Oliver Stone drew from his own experiences to make this movie), Good Morning Vietnam (Robin Williams, and it's not SO dark), obviously Apocalypse Now (but I don't know which version is best, I've only seen the "redux"). There are a lot more but I don't want to beat you over the head with them.

IT'S NOT THE ARMY. It's the Marine Corps. Big difference. Don't make that mistake around a Marine. (I'm not one.)

The blind patriots get awful quiet when there's music to face, and hopefully some lessons are learned in silence.

To answer your questions on the origin of the terms Charlie and Gook. Charlie is derived from the military phonetic alphabet. The North Vietnamese Army, NVA, is Nathaniel Victor Alpha, and the Viet Cong, VC, is Victor Charlie. Nathaniel and Charlie became nicknames for the NVA and VC respectively. As for Gook, it comes from "Hello" in Vietnamese. Which sounds like "Me Gook" when spoken. Which, to the early American Soldiers and Marines sounded like an introduction. So they started using it as a slang term.

Ann Margaret may be best known for starring in Viva Las Vegas with Elvis back in the day.

I swear Simone said "Welcome to Cinebitch" in the opening. Which seems like the dark alternate universe version of this channel where George and her would just destroy films instead of trying to enjoy them.

Do we honestly expect or require two civilians from a different damn country to know and remember the difference?.. sincerely a Danish civilian that wishes people would just cool of a tiny bit when it comes to this stuff..

I had no idea you were so opposed to sharing information, my mistake.

And not to be pedantic, but it's Ann-Margret. Which, okay, is pretty pedantic. :)

Sharing information is entirely reasonable and welcome.. Warning a foreigner to not mess up the branch of another country’s military force seems kinda out there in comparison.. I’m not sure i could differentiate between any branch of a foreign nations military with any kind of reliability, and expecting me to get it right is insane..

I was a nipper living down the road when the Hue battle scenes were shot at the old Beckton Gasworks in London . Kubrick had to pump a load of smoke out to obscure the London skyline behind it, it bloody stank! I remember loving hearing all the booms and bangs of the pyrotechnics, lol.

for what it's worth, marine drill instructors SOMETIMES are like Gunnery Seargent but not always.

and yes the idea is to break a person so you can build them back up
