Christopher Nolan themed all three of his Batman movies differently, the theme of this one is fear. If you were to psychologically disect Bruce Wayne's psyche into pieces each villian in the Batman mythology is a representation of one aspect, as though it could even be them looking back at him when he looks in the mirror (For example if we were to take Two-Face, he represents conflict, which is what Bruce Wayne feels by choosing to take on dual personalities, and having to learn how to deal with the sacrifices of that conflict). As Scarecrow in the comics is the embodiment of Bruce Wayne's fear, naturally he was the villian selected for Batman Begins. I'm not going to say what the theme of the 2nd and 3rd movies in the trilogy are, but if you haven't yet filmed those reactions if would be interesting to hear your thoughts on what you think those themes could be :)

The Nolan Batman movies, in addition to being practically shot, were also intended to be things that could actually work in the real world. Like the bat suit is prototype combat armor, the tumbler they actually built, and the concepts are more like what we might encounter. That said, this one feels the most like a comic in tone, story and appearance. The other two have a much grittier, more grounded feel to them.

New York City has been called Gotham City since the 19th century. However, the Gotham City of Batman is not supposed to be New York City exactly.
