The nurse in Bastogne was real and was killed in the bombing. Don't know how well Eugene knew her but he would have seen her taking the wounded in to the church.

One round per man doesn't mean each man only had one round, it means only fire 1 round per man instead of the usual double tap or more. Generally you fire 2 or more per enemy to ensure he's down/dead, 1 round could wound him and he can continue to fight.

No, it literally meant each trooper had a single round. In a firefight you don't bother to deliberately shoot a solder twice. You shoot in the direction of anyone shooting at you. No one in the military even uses the term "double tap".
