Haunting of Hill House - Episode 7&8 - Patreon Version

Alan Walker

Time for arguably the greatest jump scare in TV history...followed immediately by your guts getting wrenched out by Theo's engrossing monologue. This show is written almost perfectly, in my opinion.

While this week has The Moment We've All Been Waiting For, this episode pair also has some of the strongest monologues in the show. Mr Dudley, Luke, and Theo have their standout moments here. Speaking of Theo, Kate Siegel is a powerhouse during her breakdown scene. Serious talent on display. And I love Hugh and Steve's whole conversation in the car.

EP8: possibly the best jump-scare in television! Not only because it’s effective, but because it precipitates directly to causing Theo’s amazingly acted breakdown that permanently impacts the growth of the sisters’ relationship for the rest of the show. Flanagan and company nailed it. Had to pause it and rewind on my first watch cause heart rate went nuts haha

mojo shivers

The car jump scare of episode 8 “Witness Marks” is the scariest instance of it in any show or movie I’ve ever seen. It’s the furthest I’ve leaped from a jump scare ever. The whole back half of the series is some of craziest yet emotional storytelling I’ve ever seen.

imperial

Can't wait to see THAT jump scare reaction.

anna

to me, shirley is the realest character. just so angry and controlling over everything due to years of craziness/trauma. i understand why some people might find her frustrating but elizabeth reaser is so great at portraying her as this flawed and damaged person. also that jumpscare in ep8 made me pause the show when i first watched this lol it was so well done

I'm the same with Shirley, I've a lot more sympathy for her than a lot of the fanbase seems to..! I understand where her neuroses come from, I feel that's very well explained throughout the show.

Noel Valdez

I find Shirley to be unpleasant but to be fair I’d be fucking livid if my friend or nevertheless family was kissing or being intimate like that with my partner. She’s prickly but I understand why she is the way she is. Also, we all got to admit we could be her depending on the situation. (At least I can and have. Haha) My family has had a lot of turmoil and not to throw shit at least Shirley has real reasons to be the way she is. My family has members that don’t talk to each other and won’t show up to things for far less and super petty stuff. lol

kbobravo

Mr. Dudley's monologue is quite possibly the best of the whole series.

Its funny most people when they watch this show hates Steve. Lol I feel like I would be him, refusing to believe that what Im seeing is true cause the idea of being mentally ill still sounds better than seeing real ghost. I feel like it could be a personality test. See which one annoys you the most. haha

Noel Valdez

I felt like watching reactions most people hated Steve. Lol maybe its just the videos I saw. But from the jump alot of people hate Steve in the vids I saw at least.

My favorite thing to do on Tuesday is watching your reaction to "Hill House"

Tenwyn

Pretty sure bowler hat guy also had a cane

Kameron Webb

I freaking love Tuesdays! I'm so ready to get to episode 8!

Aside from Theo's superpowers they're all very realistic characters. I never disliked or was annoyed by Shirley, she's a bit stubborn but who isn't. Also she was completely justified in her anger IMO.

Philipp Roensch

I can agree with Shirley being a strain, but I would say the whole family has difficulty dealing with the paranormal and real issues. Their father was so strong in his protection and denial that no other ways to cope have opened up to them, certainly not communicating. It is tragic and so heartbreaking to see.

China Andronicus

Shirley to me is horrid because of the reveal in the final episode. She’s grating from the start, if realistic, but after that reveal, this episode becomes unforgivable to me.

j...

Not sure why Shirley seems grating to these two. If anything, she has remarkable personal integrity which I find incredibly admirable, and she should absolutely expect better from her siblings for taking blood money that was profited from their childhood trauma.

gurz

they literally explain it in the video? because she presents her self as a holier than thou character when she is just as guilty (and thats before the finale reveal). secondly, during times of crisis everyone in the family tries to help or talk to each other and she just yells at people for what theyre doing wrong then shuts them out. everyone has flaws but when things get hard for someone else, they come in and help for better or worse. Shirley just judges people. No one likes people that looks down on others.

Mike FromOz

If you would like to see a movie from a different perspective, please watch "A Ghost Story". It's really well portrayed and an excellent meditation on what life after death might be like.

Watching spooky cinema with you just doesn’t grow old. Simone’s terror paired with the sheer glee on George’s face is so entertaining. 😂 Theo’s monologue will never cease to make me bawl my eyes out, no matter how many times I watch this. Amazing actress.

SIMONE SURVIVED! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🖖🏾

ShoNuff3000

Okay I may be the first. Ep. 7 Mr Dudley's monologue 👍🏾 that actor was in Rose the Hat's crew. He was the one that leaned out of the van to pick up the little baseball boy.

You guys should go on YouTube and see the compilation of people's reactions to Nell jumping out of the back seat to stop them from arguing. https://youtu.be/fM6x2ZjVImo?si=AOx_L0Uz8lSdvFPq

Da Big Appa

I empathized with Simone so much with the jump scare. Not that she got scared but that she hurt herself because of it. Getting old sucks lol

Late Kate

In my experience people are a lot less tolerant of people who cope through trauma with anger/extremely controlling behavior (Both very real effects of trauma) than they are of other coping mechanisms. Luke does horrible things, but I think because people see him sad and in pain (unlike Shirley who almost never shows her pain outwardly except anger) they forgive him much easier. Also likeability helps overlook negative things. Like with Theo.

Thomas Yanez

Wow, I've never seen somebody NOT see Shirley for the Karen that she is.

Thomas Yanez

Yeah, I am not sure what it WOULD take to make me believe something was REALLY supernatural. I'd definitely be Steve for most of this show.

sarCC

I watched ODDITY a few nights ago. OK movie, but it had some of the best (non-cheap) jump scares in it. One of them hurt my neck!

Grandalf

After watching it this morning, I'm probably going to binge Midnight Mass again tonight for some more great Flanagan monologues. Especially the conversation between Joe (Mr. Dudley) and the girl (I can't remember her name).

Grandalf

Now that is the best jump scare on film.

j...

I see. Forgive my ignorance, this is my first time watching the show with these guys so I am not as well informed. These were just my initial thoughts. I don't know if my wording seemed a bit standoffish. I'll see if the finale changes my mind.

Stephanie Bedworth

She's easily my least favorite of the siblings as well. In fact, whenever I watch reactions to this show, I usually skip the second episode that centers on her.

Mitchell Bowker

For someone who found out her husband and sister both took the money behind her back & lied about it for years, then found them entangled in a storage room afterwards, all the while trying to organize the funeral for her other sister... Shirley is handling it better than most.
