For a rom-com, this was a bit depressing. It just feels like they settled in the end due to societal pressures or something. I feel like they would've been happier as just friends. But I really enjoyed the reaction and the movie for what it was

Obviously you're entitled to your opinion but I don't really see this The entire point is that their friendship is what made the relationship happen. But both of them had to grow as people through the years (Harry more than Sally imo). If they had simply dated off the bat, they would have broken up and been but exes they sometimes remember. It was their friendship that slowly healed each of them with what they had gone through until they had healed enough that they no longer had to look inward as much and finally saw each other in a different light. Their friendship is what healed them enough for a relationship that could last. Even in real life this exact thing happens and I don't see it as societal at all because they were more than happy being friends for a long time despite the friends. But that's just my view of it.
