I can answer your science question about the bacteria. Bacteria do not see you as an animal that they want to eat, the way we see a pig and imagine bacon. Bacteria sees you as a clump of molecules that they want to eat. And aliens would have molecules too.

This movie was Spielberg very deliberately exploring the emotions of the 9/11 tragedy, so it includes many visually powerful evocations of the tragedy -- like the "people dust" (evoking the dust from the towers falling) and the floating clothes (meant to evoke the jumpers from the buildings), the downed airplane, etc. Overall, it's such a good movie that has remained powerful sci-fi. I think it's so underrated, and was also so glad you both empathized with the children. At the time the movie came out, everyone just seemed to hate poor Dakota Fanning's character because she screamed and cried, while I was applauding her character, because that is what a terrified little girl would do. I thought her performance was just superb. I really hope you guys also react to "Gattaca" (a classic) one day soon, and would definitely also recommend another similarly dark film from this era from Spielberg, "A.I." Great reaction as always!

I dunno about those connections to 9/11. Seems like a stretch to me. There is always likely to be dust after an explosion, and clothes falling doesn't really evoke the imagery of people falling to their deaths
