Patron Jason Gary gave me the idea for this post, so kudos to him, and in general to all of you folks for keeping this community so alive and resounding with good vibes!!!

As you know, VR seems to be going through an awkward phase where there are more headset models (with new ones coming out seemingly every day) than games available to be played on them. Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but still.

I have a few different ones, and I try to keep up with issues and quirks even for the models I don't own, but I think it would be good if you guys had a place where you can exchange solutions and suggestions to run my mods (and why not, VR games in general) on different headsets, especially "atypical" ones like for example the new Varjo Aero, Pimax models, etc.

So here it is :-) I'll break the ice by mentioning that the headshake recentering gesture doesn't seem to work on the Varjo Aero, as it fails to report its angular velocity to the VR runtime. However, I found a workaround for a similar problem that Pimax headset also had, so hopefully your headshakes won't be in vain forever!

Cool great idea 👌🏻 Helping each other to get the best experience 👍🏻

drowhunter

so..... what was the point of this post? Are we getting a new R.E.A.L mod discord, with channels for each headset? I know you can link discord roles to patreon as well.

realvr

The point is just like the previous performance-related post (https://www.patreon.com/posts/performance-62198283): to provide a point of aggregation for comments, this time regarding specific headsets

I'm using a Vive Pro with the wireless adapter and have been getting low FPS results in RDR2 compared to others with similar machine specs (i9 7900x, EVGA 3090 FTW3, 32gb ram). Tried various hardware/software changes which made very little difference. I also own a Quest 2 with link cable and tried it out with RDR2 for comparison (big thanks to Luke Ross for the suggestion). My framerate went from 50-60 fps on Vive Pro to 80-90 fps on Quest 2 with all the same settings! Removed the wireless adapter and reverted back to cable with Vive Pro and my framerate then matched the 80-90 fps I was getting on Quest 2. I did some digging around on various threads and see that the wireless adapter is a known CPU hog, but still surprised to see it making a 30 fps difference. I even tried overclocking my i9 7900x to 4.7 GHz (vs 3.3 GHz stock) which gave me some pretty awesome benchmark scores, but only made a small FPS change when using the wireless adapter. I tried all the wireless adapter suggestions I found (different PCIe slot, bios change, etc.) which made no difference. Curious to hear performance results from anyone else using a Vive Pro with wireless adapter option.

So, I'm taking this as 1) This post/thread is for us to hopefully exchange solutions for various headset issues and 2) It sounds like Luke has a workaround for some headsets that don't recognize the headshake gesture coming soon?

This post hits hard. I don't even think the joke is hyperbole. I'm a VR newcomer and I already have 3 headsets. And realistically speaking I only own a single AAA title that is made from the ground up to be exclusive to VR, and that's Half Life Alyx. Everything else feels like a tech demo, or is just a VR mode in an already fully-featured game. I'm not upset by the latter category, as I think that's where you usually find the best VR content anyway, which is why I'm looking forward to the Cyberpunk mod. Games need to be sellable to the widest audience if you want publishers to put serious quality into it, so VR modes and mods for regular flat games are a great stopgap for the time-being, until VR becomes ubiquitous enough for companies to really make games for it.

Agree. I'm getting a lot of mileage from VR mods. HZD has been one of my favourite VR experiences of all time so far. These are well worth a look though IMHO; Lone Echo, Asgards Wrath, Moss, Boneworks, Senua's Sacrifice, Blade and Sorcery. and if you're at all into sims MSFS, Asetto Corsa and Dirt Rally 2 . All great games :)

Joseph Wall

Thanks for the suggestions. I already have Asgard's Wrath but it just kinda feels cheap. Like a b grade god of war. Not that it's bad but I mean I have never made it past the beginning part where you make the shark dude and maybe that's my fault for having a millennial attention span but I honestly just don't feel compelled to go farther than just throwing fish in the shark guys mouth and closing the game after getting bored. I gotta get more into it. And I have all of those sim games, that's always great. I gotta play moss and boneworks and senuas sacrifice but I own those too. Might check out blade and sorcery. But yeah I mean compared to the amount of high quality exclusives I'd have if I just bought a PS5, it's still pretty pitiful. That being said though, yeah, I got 3 straight hours of hzd in VR last night and that was excellent so I'm even more excited for the cyberpunk mod.

Yeah, you're exactly right. Not a great deal to show for six years of VR development. Glad we are getting some quality mods of AAA games now. Personally, God of War would be one I'd love to see given the VR treatment!

Joseph Wall

Yeah I've been thinking about that all day after playing HZD last night. God Of War would be perfect for the way that the third person camera for this mod works. It doesn't even need first person implementation, honestly it's more fun to play and see the sights with the third person camera implementation in this mod. I'm going to buy the Mafia definitive edition trilogy literally just to play with this mod, since I only beat the first two in their flat original form anyway, it'll be a whole new experience. Honestly after Cyberpunk gets implemented, I feel like it's best to start looking into more third person games. I'm not downplaying VR at all. It's amazing. But through this mod, I've discovered that it's so much more than I thought it could be. It doesn't even have to be a game made for the ground up for motion controls, it can just be a different (and arguably superior) way to display normal games that I already play, like how it works in HZD. I mean roughly it's the same as playing it on a TV, but the TV surrounds you and has head tracking, it really sells the effect that you're in the world. Not only does it sell the effect, honestly the lack of motion controls and the ability to just sit in a chair and chill and play a normal third person game but just using my headset has now given me way more use out of the headset. This mod is a game changer.

Y'all played the Outer WIlds VR yet? It's VR's killer app, I say.

I have a Pimax 5kxr headset on only an i7 4790k at 4 ghz, with a gtx970. I only played mafia de, but think best performance is by running the games in oculus mode(not steamvr) with pitool renderquality set to highest(2) so the in-game-resolution can be lower(for better performance). This seems to be better than the in-game-resolution higher with pitool renderquality set to 1. To be able to run in oculus mode, first oculus home needs to be installed or 2 dll files can be placed in game folder. https://community.openmr.ai/t/dirt-rally-guide/34372/2 . Then I imported the game in pitool, setting smart smoothing on and render quality to 2. Then I created short-cut executing: ""C:\Program Files\Pimax\Plugin\OCSupport\OVR_Launcher_x64.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mafia Definitive Edition\mafiadefinitiveedition.exe" " starting in ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Mafia Definitive Edition" " . When I left click on the shortcut (and select run with admin-rights) the mod can also select oculus and startvr. update: Just tried Mafia III definitive, it also better performance with oculus selected. GTA V does not like being run through the OVR_launcher from pitool and thusfar I cannot get oculus mode to work :( .

I have both the Rift's but I've actually been playing all my VR on a Quest 2 lately. I use it as a PC HMD more often than not. The higher res (and refresh rate) screen is nice to have. I'm not willing to buy a Pimax... Just not, but I understand why people like them. If I was going to buy something different it would either be an index or vive whatever. The only reason I didn't buy the index was because I LOVE inside out tracking and despite a couple scenarios where it doesn't work as well as having lights shot across your room, I've found it to be close enough to the point that it's just not worth the hassle of setting up base stations. I realize the absolute best way would be a combo of both but I don't see anyone doing that. Honestly I'm kinda surprised that nobody has taken something like the Kinect for PC and used it to enhance the Rift S & Quest although who besides me still has one? It was terrible on Xbox because it didn't have a dedicated CPU like originally intended but the PC version doesn't need to worry about that and the tracking is actually insane. We have used them at work in some of our robit prototypes. That still wouldn't completely solve for not having a 2nd one behind you but you should be able to take the inside out tracking data, data from the sensors in the controllers and then add in the tracking data from a single Kinect and provided you did your math correct (someone call John Carmack) it should be more accurate than 2 base stations or a Rift cv1 with 3 sensors. Even if something is excluded from view you can in theory use motion data from the controllers sensor suite for about a minute to accurately track their position in 3d space. I'm rambling... I must be exhausted. I was about to go to bed until I remembered I needed to join here and also see if I could get in some laps on Gran Turismo 7. Dunno what time it unlocks but I thought it said midnight.. which was 3 hours ago lol

Hey Luke, I know you're swamped with Cyberpunk so no worries on my end but just curious if you have a rough timeframe in mind for the re-center workaround that you hope to release? Maybe within the next month? Torn between my Aero and Q2. One has better visuals and the other has convenience of head shake. Do you think it will simply be a button press?

realvr

A workaround will be in the next release! Could you remind me if you're using the Aero with OpenVR or OpenXR? Also, do you notice other problems beside the headshake not being registered, compared to what you experience in the Quest 2?

Ken Knutson

Cool! On the Aero software, I currently have both OpenVr and OpenXR compatibility enabled. In the mod overlay I am using OpenXR. Not really noticing anything else except maybe a few textures here and there being kind of shimmery. Using FSR and the highest PPD on the Aero I am getting about 60 fps on Mafia DE. Let me know if you have any other questions,

realvr

Please use the "Reply to comment" button so we don't create a new thread each time! Thank you for your answer :-) Don't you notice anything weird with the HUD jittering, like it was being dragged along with the image every time you turn around?

Ken Knutson

oops, sorry meant to use reply. Hmm, I don't recall having issues with that? Later today when I play I will pay closer attention to see. One place that does flicker is just the home screen for some reason - the office area behind the home screen text block flickers but don't really care about that since its not part of the gameplay. But it doesn' t do that on Q2.

Ken Knutson

Just played, didn't notice any jittering of the hud. I think I may have had that issue once when I was experimenting with different runtimes and maybe had SteamVR runtime on in the mod overlay using the Aero and that was super jittery.

hi luke dont know if im supposed to post here but the rdr2 vr mod isnt working for me everytime i go to boot up rdr2 with the mod it just closes the game down flicks an error message for 0.01 seconds lol im on an oculus quest and im doing it through air link, could you maybe run through the steps of how to start the mod? thanks!

realvr

Hi Hazel, please see the README for RDR2 which is attached here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/61857891 Also, you might try running RealConfig from a command prompt window instead of clicking on it, so if there are any errors the window won't close and you'll be able to send them to me

Hazel Daisy

Thanks for the help Luke! its all running nice and easy for me now and i would just like to say thank you for making the rdr2 mod because its been really fun!
