A brief post just to announce that Mafia III: Definitive Edition is looking good, and unless something unexpected comes up, it should be ready for release in a few days.

As I was saying in comments to previous posts, it is a more divisive, love-it-or-hate-it kind of game. The gameplay is probably not very inspired and the mission structure is quite repetitive, but the story is excellent and it really brings you into the world. The map size is huge, comparable with GTA V (see https://youtu.be/mXua-kpctF0?t=222) and the detail is amazing, in terms both of scenery reconstruction and of how alive the city and the bayou feel.

The graphics quality is quite similar to Mafia: DE, and much better than Mafia II: DE. In fact, the remake of the original Mafia was made using a slightly modified version of the original Mafia III engine. That also means that in terms of performance, you can expect frame rates in the same range as Mafia, and not the higher fps that are possible with Mafia II: DE.

The game has surround audio, which sounds incredible in VR. You can distinctly hear where each voice, sound or noise is coming from, and the spatial audio image correctly rotates when you turn your head.

The VR conversion will support first person just like I did for Mafia, both on foot and while driving vehicles (Mafia III has cars, trucks and boats). The quick adjustment technique that I introduced for Mafia II, and backported to Mafia, since release 2.0.0 will allow you to perfectly tune your driving position for each vehicle in a matter of seconds, without using sliders.

And finally, the upcoming release of the mod will have a big surprise for you []-)

It's not motion controls (you already know my position on the matter), but it is something many of you have asked for. Making it work in VR took me quite some time, and I have no doubt that it will generate a veritable flood of new requests for support, but Mafia III really screamed for this new feature, so I decided that it was the right moment to introduce it. It will benefit all other games, past and future, that the mod supports.

(Speaking of other games: if you don't own GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, or the Mafia Trilogy yet, I've just been informed that Humble Bundle has them all on sale at huge discounts!)

Back to testing and tweaking! Thank you for the continuing support, without you guys none of this would be possible <3

Love the soundtrack on mafia 3.

I knew that I was forgetting to mention something! The soundtrack is out of this world :-D

Awesome! Now I'm really curious about this new upcoming feature. I have no clue but can't wait to see what it is

On an unrelated note, I've been looking at the varjo aero & thinking of selling some headaets to fund it. Can you think of any possible incompatibilities with it & your mods?

realvr

I have absolutely no idea! Shipping is in 3-4 months, so only famous YouTubers have had any access to the hardware. It seems to be using SteamVR though, so unless they try to make some special driver that messes things up it should work out of the box. I'm quite worried about the optical distortion though. All reviewers that have tried it have mentioned very noticeable barrel distortion and pupil swim. Resolution is important, sure, but perceiving the world as unstable has a severe impact both on immersion and on how many hours one can enjoy in VR.

Thanks for the answer. I was unsure if they have their own software layer running & remembered the problems I had with the cosmos elite. I have 2 headsets I don't use which would probably fund over half the price so I might take a gamble. I could probably adapt to barrel distortion if the clarity is that good. & if not I reckon I could sell it on at the purchase price

If I’ve learnt anything over the span of my lifetime, in particular with regards to vr, is that there are very few vr influencers (youtubers) who dont go through the roof over every new game or headset that comes out. The positivity and hysterics rarely match what you actually get in the end. I’ve had my eye on the varjo headset too and it does seem very promising but give it time to release and really get tested before pre-ordering. Just a friendly piece of advice ;)

Thanks. Thats probably sensible. Its just I've been waiting for a base station tracked headset with g2 or better res, colours, lenses & clarity for ages

That's really great to read. Personally, I think Mafia 3 is the best and I'm really happy to play it in VR, if we didn't have the hatch, a lot would not be possible Thank you

Solomon Ginsberg

We’re all in the same boat :) It’s your choice of course and the headset does seem capable. Try to resist a little bit more… There’s seems to be a lot happening right now in the vr market. I’d wait until at least early next year to see what immerges.

I hope they got rid of the "adaptative" AI that ruined the races for me. If not for that, that would be the best arcade races of the PS4 era along Forza Horizon: I have no clue what the surprise can be ... Anyway, the big question is, what comes after Mafia 3 ? :-O

Where are the downloads for mods ?

To be honest I found Mafia 3 quite boring when I played it in 2d when it came out. But I also found mafia 2 quite boring. Yet with the VR mod I loved mafia 2. It's just incredible to drive around in these open worlds in VR. Can't wait for the Mafia 3 mod :)

Hmm I wonder what this surprise is?? you mentioned its not motion control support so I wonder is it gamepad support using motion controllers?*?%? I must say if it is, that is a huge convenience. I'm probably miles off but I'm quite excited to find out what it is.

The Merote

Unless its Make the REAL compatible with ReShade presets I really have no idea, I'm very excited for Mafia 3, I tried Vorpx and as usual it just don't cut it so left it sitting in my Steam library waiting for the day it gets VR support and now that day is close, I have a feeling Mafia 3 will be a much better game in VR.

My fps tank to around 25-30 in intense scenes like the hotel or Chinese restaurant. Set to 2700x2700 on a 3090 and 130-170 fps most of the time. Even after an intense scene, when things calm down, the fps stays really low until you get outside. In general fps decreases when indoors for some reason. Has anyone else experienced this?

Samir

Excited for the Mafia 3 mod since I've never played that game! Also out of curiosity would a game like Forza Horizon 5 be possible to mod like the other games you've done?

Really excited for this one, have enjoyed playing the first 2 over again, now i just want to drive around New Bordeaux listening to that awesome soundtrack. You said on 1st November it will be a few days unless something unexpected happens, so did something happen ? Sorry to sound like an impatient child its just i cant wait to play it again. Mafia 3 received so much criticism and i understand why but i really enjoyed my first playthrough despite the repetitiveness and to relive it again in VR is going to be a treat. Keep up the good work Luke you are doing gods work. Thank You.

Hi. Thank You for this, Mafia 2 was one of my fav games (the music, time period etc) , I can enjoy the game in VR now, although my 2080 can't really do REAL VR that good ( only at @1800 res I can hit 140 fps needed for 72hz, so I am using the other type at 2400x 90fps). I do have some small questions (my System is I7 9700k, and RTX 2080; 32gb ram) - I came here after i've been playing GTA5 with your mod. I own a Quest 2, and it seems that this new mod just ignores everything I have in Oculus setup beside the HZ and sharpness, or am I wrong? So no matter what res I change or SS or fov etc, they will be ignored? - I have played RDR2 also, and at 72hz and on Low settings and @2000 rez with DLS I can hit that target, maybe sometimes 65fps in harder places, is this enough for this card? - Lastly, I do not own Mafia 3 or 1 yet, but it seems that it is a newer engine than M2, so i don't know if I should buy M3, if my system can run it. It is OK if you can't answer any of my questions, and I apologize if there are already answers here somewhere ( patreon seems a mess for me). Thank you for these ports, they are the most awesome things since bread was invented (Sorry about my English).
