Hi! As I kind of expected, version 1.4.0 was a bumpy ride. Many people seem to have the game running correctly in VR, with DLSS and all the bells and whistles. However, others are reporting a few different problems, some of them blocking issues, and of course I want to solve all of them and have the mod work at its best for everybody.

This 1.4.1 version is just a debug release. It brings nothing new to the table, so if your game is running fine you don't need to upgrade. When all the problems are solved, I will make a new "normal" release for everybody. On the contrary, if you are unable to run the game in VR, please install this debug release so we'll have more meaningful logs and with a little luck I'll be able to understand what's going wrong for some of you.

1. If, after installing 1.4.1, you cannot even open the mod overlay (i.e., the mod doesn't seem to attach to the game) please do the following: quit the game; download the extra .bat file that I'm attaching down below, "RealCleanRunAsAdmin.bat", and put it into the game folder where RDR2.exe is; as the name says, run "RealCleanRunAsAdmin.bat" as administrator (you have to right-click on it to select that option). The problem that this file is meant to solve is an unexpected issue originating from the fact that, during the past few days when the game had to be downgraded to continue playing in VR, many of you decided to move the game installation to another folder or drive. That was not a supported scenario, due to a bug (or "feature") in the system Vulkan loader which gets confused if a layer with the same name is listed as being present in different folders. "RealCleanRunAsAdmin.bat" cleans up all traces of previous mod layer installations found on the system, just like I advised a few of you to do manually with Regedit. I can't expect everybody to be confident to use Regedit though, that's why I'm including this new utility file. After running this file, which will basically remove every past or present installation of the mod from the Vulkan system, please remember to run "RealConfig.bat" as usual, from the actual folder where you now want to run the game.

2.If instead you can open the overlay just fine, but the "Start VR" button is missing from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab and the game doesn't appear in the headset, simply install 1.4.1, run RealConfig.bat, launch the game and let it get to the initial menus, before loading the Story, then quit. You should now have a RealVR64.log file in the game folder. Open it with Notepad, copy all its contents to the clipboard, go to https://pastebin.com , paste the log contents into the large blank box, then click on "Create New Paste". That will bring you to a new page in the browser, with a URL like https://pastebin.com/abc123de. Copy that URL and put it in your comment or reply so I can take a look at your log and hopefully understand what is going wrong on your system.

3. Some people do have both the overlay and VR working, but the view jitters because they're using a WMR headset like the Reverb G2. Due to a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR that MS never seems to get around to fixing properly, with WMR headsets you need to use OpenXR. Select the OpenXR renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab in the mod overlay; the mod will save and remember your choice for the next runs. If you still have jitters after that, get the OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality from the Microsoft Store, and use them to check that your active OpenXR runtime is set to WMR (if it's set to SteamVR, tracking might still not work correctly). Then, in the developer settings page of the tools, you should make sure that Custom render scale is set to 100% and that Motion reprojection is Disabled.

4. If you get weird errors when starting the game, like "ERR_GFX_STATE", check that you don't have overlays or streaming applications installed and interfering. Several users have already reported that they solved their problems after removing Twitch Studio. I will try to understand what makes it incompatible with the mod, but for now the workaround is to disable/remove it.

5. I also saw several other comments mentioning sporadic or frequent crashes, trouble with image quality on the Valve Index, issues with crosshair alignment, etc. I will address all of these problems, but first I want to make sure that the game at least enters VR mode for everybody!

thanks I look forward to trying this Luke/

In case this helps anyone else, I had an issue with the game not showing in the headset (Valve Index, Steam VR). I found that it was because I had previously set Steam to always run as Administrator. After changing that back to not run as administrator it started working. To note, this is the Rockstar Launcher version of the game.

Toshie27

when I run the RealCleanRunAsAdmin it always says \ Windows \ system32 \ RealVR.ini could not be found?

Anonymous

Is this going to affect the GTA5 VR mod? https://www.dexerto.com/gta/rockstar-gta-v-mods-gta-6-news-1613759/

Anonymous

No worries. They're going after map mods that recreate content from old games.

SteveJustSteve

Anybody know where to find a good script for AutoHotKey & vJoy to use oculus controller in RDR2? I got them to work but don't know enough about RDR2 or scripting to make it good.

Anonymous

"trouble with image quality on the Valve Index" Oh, that might explain why it looks so blurry to me. I just thought that was the way it was supposed to look.

realvr

It shouldn't look blurry though, but Hoshi82 reported it. Is your SteamVR resolution set to 100%?

realvr

I don't believe there's one (or at least nobody here seems to have found it)

Anonymous

It is. I'm going to set it to 150% and will report back.

realvr

No, 100% is the right value! Setting it higher should have no impact, while setting it lower might blurry the image

Anonymous

Hi Luke, spoke to you yesterday about issue # 2. I followed your instructions and here is the log. https://pastebin.com/w2Pb98RU

realvr

Thanks! Your log shows the exact same problem as Toshie27. I'm not sure where that comes from, but I found a workaround: hand-edit the RealVR.ini file with Notepad (while the game is not running) and change ResScaleOverride=15 to ResScaleOverride=-1 Then start the game. It should enter VR but the world in the headset will look quite blurry. At this point you can use the game menus (Settings -> Graphics, NOT the mod overlay) to set Resolution Scale to something like 5/2 or 2/1, whatever you like. I would be interested to know if that works for you, and also if, when you launch the game another time, your Resolution Scale setting is remembered or gets reset to Off.

I've been having pretty consistent crashing of my game with both 1.4 and now 1.41 as well. The game freezes with audio still playing and then I get the windows "This program stopped responding" message. RealVR64 isn't showing anything specific coinciding with the time the game crashes but I will post it anyway https://pastebin.com/qiJ0qkJQ This has been happening with both DLSS and with just TAA and res scale. Here is the Reliability history message I get from the crash as well: https://pastebin.com/s79xCjyh

Anonymous

Things I've tried with no luck: sfc /scannow, removing all mods except RealVR, Verifying Intergrity though Steam, Switching to non-beta SteamVR, reinstalling RealVR and rerunning config.bat

Anonymous

Fortunately the 1.4.0 update is working at my end. I have tried a number of permutations and have settled on running Low confg, Quality DLSS and 2970 x 2970 with 60 - 80 FPS. Sharing as it might help others. Also running the nexus TAA blur fix which makes things great when stationery. Only outstanding issue is that objects in motion and when moving controller there is a blur still. Still for mine this update bring great resolution on textures and another leap forward in VR immersion. i9-9900, GTX 2080ti, Valve index

realvr

That's very good to know, thanks! That means the clarity problems some users observed with the Index are not universal.

Anonymous

Hey I'm just gonna throw this out there, but is there a possibility bitmining programs are causing changes to Nvidias cards and are causing a problem? Even if Uninstalled

Anonymous

My new 3080 has the anti mining technology on it and it works fine

Anonymous

It freezes and crushes every time at the same moment of the game. I started a new one and at the end of the prologue while a cutscene is going it freezes, but the sound goes on. It's definitely trouble with the programming part, cause I've been monitoring the system and it's not even stressed fully. I use medium settings and my specs: i9 9900k, 1080ti, 32Gb RAM, Oculus Quest 2. By the way, even what I've seen in the game, your mod and work are terrific!

realvr

The 1080 Ti was a glorious card, but it's very weak nowadays compared to what this game requires, especially at VR resolutions. And it should be at full usage. Are you using Task Manager to monitor usage? It's not accurate, if you are please install MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner to get accurate measurements

Anonymous

Yep, I use MSI Afterburner, and I meant that the video card was stressed about 97-98%, but not fully as I could see in other games such as AC Valhalla. And the video memory is used about 6-7 gb

Anonymous

About "issues with crosshair alignment, " I did notice that when going into dead eye, with manual "painting", the "X" are recorded slightly off by a little bit. It wasn't the case before.

Anonymous

Hey Luke, so I got around to downgrading via the depot trick and I found the 1.40 and 1.41 both still present the same freeze apphangb1. I was able to consistently reproduce the crash by playing Exit Pursued By A Bruised Ego, the one where Arthur and Hosea go bear hunting. It would crash after Arthur gets his new horse while leaving valentine, sometimes during the cutscenes and other times with just riding out of Valentine. So I went and tested version 1.31 and it is golden, no freezing. I was able to play though the whole mission perfectly. Please let me know if you need anything else for me or want me to do any further testing, I check this Patreon pretty religiously so whatever you need, I'm here.

realvr

Thanks Momentum, that's solid information!! I will try and see if I can repro here. Which preset were you on, and what video card?

Anonymous

Yeah it would have froze before they get to the mountains if it was going to like mine does. Well at least 1.31 works for me and I don’t use DLSS anyway so it isn’t the end of the world. Perhaps it’s time for me to do a clean install of windows 10, I think it’s been about two years since I did last.

Anonymous

I played for around 5 hours today and only had 2 (maybe 3) crashes. That's fairly normal on RDR2 for me. I did notice that I was getting black flickers (missing frames?) alternating between eyes every so often. They seemed to come and go randomly. I don't know if that's useful info but thought I'd let you know.

Anonymous

I fixed my Crosshair issue with a fresh install of the game... i think there was some left over Reshade files in there messing it up.

Anonymous

Downloaded this version and the freezing stops but getting real jittery and its telling me that setting will not save for some reason.

Anonymous

Well i seem to be getting screen freeze around every five to ten minutes of game play. Not enough time to complete a mission.

realvr

I'm very sorry about that! As you can see from the other comments, the problem does not affect all users equally and I'm having a really hard time investigating it. Unfortunately for me the freezes only happen every few hours of gameplay, which makes debugging a nightmare, and they seem to be totally random, so for the moment I haven't been able to put my finger on any plausible root cause. What I've been able to tell for sure is that, during the very few freezes that I can observe, none of my threads is stuck and no threads whatsoever have crashed, which means that the deadlock is generated by the game itself. It's probably triggered by the slight variations in timing which come from adding VR output, and which change from system to system (hence the different behavior seen from different users). I understand that some of you experience such frequent freezes that the game becomes unplayable; I do hope to have good news in a few days, but it's almost impossible to make time estimates when the problem is so ephemeral.

Joseph Spadaford

MAC users, using bootcamp on a 2017 64 radeon pro graphics card and quest 2...this works! FInally, a cool vr game to play on a mac...with bootcamp!!!

Anonymous

Great Mod! However lately I've found it has become very jittery. The picture jumps around excessively when I move my head around. Is there a fix I'm maybe missing for this. I already reduced the head bobbing etc.

Anonymous

Okay so I have painfully (but not very) played through A Quiet Time first new rdr2 update and 1.4 and it froze during the peeing scene. Retry w/ 1.41 and cleanrun and freeze when opening door to see Lenny banging himself. Downgrade rdr2. Freezes at the very end while running away (but I have mystery freezing could be cause wasn't ran in fresh restart) then I do old rdr2 with 1.3 and textures on high and clear the mission. Attempt again old rdr2 with 1.4 freezes at piss scene and opening the sexy door. Final try lowest settings textures on high and still freeze at piss. I hope this is helpful. I'm going to work on a bass house remix of the song from a quiet time now lol

Anonymous

I would like to add that 1.4 looks notably sharper than 1.3 Also I never tried Dlss and I have a 2080 ti, rift S and an amd VR ready motherboard

How is the best way to Launch the game on Oculus? I have the Steam version, but I launch the game from Oculus Air home it says I don't own the game in Rockstar launcher... So to get it to run I have to start it from Steam, but then I've got Oculus, Steam, Steam VR and Rockstar all running. Is all that necessary to have running? I'm wondering if that is what is making the game run so slow? Can I run it from oculus home without Steam VR? Wish Virtual Desktop worked! I hate Oculus Air/Link... Thanks

SteveJustSteve

Oh and does it make a difference what OpenXR runtime is being used steam or oculus?

Solomon Ginsberg

Anyone else getting a freeze when trying to start the train after helping Bo and Penelope? As soon as I push the Y button in the drivers place the game freezes and the camera in the HMD starts making a slow right hand turn. Its happened three times in a row at the exact same time. On an Index.

Derrick taylor

yes, it is happening to me. it usually freezes at the same spot at various place. after doing a mission, I rode through Valentine on my way to the camp and it froze. Then I reload the game and I started near Valentine and it froze at the same point in town again within 1 minute of restarting the game. the first time it took 15 minutes to that point of the game. On the mission with Lenny at the Bar, the screen went black after some cut scenes of them getting drunk.

Anonymous

The same problem, but in the other moment.

realvr

You need to fix your game folder permissions so that you have full access to it. See this video tutorial from Paradise Decay if you have trouble: https://youtu.be/aVi3qG3J6qc?t=118

Hello Luke, I found out something about AMD graphics cards, if you have Virtual Super Resolution on. Does the mod not work at all, normally it should be the same with DLSS but AMD graphics cards don't work

Anonymous

https://pastebin.com/8q76iB0E WMR Odyssey+ Game would load into a square window and overlay works, but VR is not available for SteamVR or OpenXR Let me know if you need any more information

realvr

VSR has no effect on the image quality in VR, it's only useful to have a better image on your monitor. With AMD you should use the Resolution Scale which is built into the game.

realvr

Hi, thanks for the log! You have the same issue as two other users, so I have a workaround ready for you: before running the game again, edit RealVR.ini and change ResScaleOverride=15 to ResScaleOverride=-1 Then start the game. It should enter VR normally. [This workaround is only for users with AMD video cards]

Orregon

Will there be any chance of VR controller use for shooting or is that impossible here?

Anonymous

https://pastebin.com/Fsx0hMjG HP Reverb G2 AMD 6700 XT Game loads in square window, overlay works, VR not available and have selected OpenXR. FYI, my pastebin was too long so I removed a huge amount of 'RVRMgr will not be created (temporary resize)' line items. Thank you!

realvr

That issue should be solved in the upcoming release, but for the moment I have a workaround: before running the game again, edit RealVR.ini and change ResScaleOverride=15 to ResScaleOverride=-1 Then start the game. Hopefully it should enter VR ;-)
