My personal trainer and I had a bet going on - he was convinced that even if I was in his body I wouldn't be able to complete his usual full-body workout, matching all weights, reps and sets. I liked Ryan a lot but he bought into his own hype a lot and was quick to put other's beneath him, even his loyal paying clients like myself.
"It's science of the mind, dude," he would say. "You aren't ready to jump that hurdle, you just aren't." It was a daunting task, that was for sure, but I didn't like Ryan's implication that I wouldn't be able to push myself so I decided to take on the challenge with one caveat - if I won the bet then I got to keep his body. He was so confident that he agreed and even shook on it, creating a magical bond that would keep us in our exchanged bodies if I met the criteria of the task.
It was tough, I won't lie to you. 140kg squats, 100kg bench press, 60kg trap shrugs, 40kg bicep curls... each weight was so much heavier than I'd ever lifted before in my life but in Ryan's body the struggle wasn't quite as much as it would have been otherwise. I felt a burn in all of his muscles as I pushed his body to its limit as well as my own mind, managing to match him on every exercise up until we reached the last part of his workout - the chest press machine. He loaded it up with 80kg and smirked. Despite his confidence wavering the further I got throughout his workout, I could tell that he was sure I would fail at the last hurdle.
The past fifty minutes in Ryan's body had been some of the best I had ever experienced though. My enjoyment of working out had all but tripled given the burn I felt in each of his strong muscles and the prospect of keeping it for myself was precisely the adrenaline rush I needed to begin blasting through the set right up until I reached the last rep. A future in his strong muscular body was right in my sights and I could see the panic in his eyes as he realized that his own future was in jeopardy. Unfortunately for him that was all of the motivation I needed for that final push...
