Review:

The Den of Chaos is a title I've once booted up for a short moment and told myself I'll absolutely get back to one day, because the combat left me intrigued with how it reminded me of the old-school "Tales of..." series.

You control Maribel - a young and beautiful cleric on her mission to vanquish monsters.
Both games focus at boss fights only, while the latter also has a dungeon exploration feature that helps you boost your stats while also being required to find key items to continue your journey.

Look, I'll be honest - it was absolutely the smooth pixel art that drew me to this title, because the gameplay... how am I gonna put it... I really liked where it was going, and felt that it had a lot of potential if the dev actually wanted to deliver a through and through 1 on 1 boss fight experience.

Maribel only gets basic movement, a simple combo, dash, backstep and 4 spells that you unlock you progress.
It's really not a lot to work with, especially since the bosses are very one dimensional and keep repeating the same moves over and over. In some cases it becomes an endurance battle to see how often you can dodge the same patterns while chipping away at the boss. (now that I think about it, maybe that's a plus, given how Monster Hunter works the same way)

I just wanted this game to be more, because this could have one of the top gameplays among H titles out there given to the right hands.
Even the H scenes are few, which also left me longing for me, given how beautifully drawn the pixel animations are.

The first title takes roughly 30 mins to finish, and the second one about an hour+.
Both running on Adobe Flash (yeah).

Usually I'd say go watch the galleries instead at this case, but I have to admit that these sequels have some unexplained charm to them that will keep you hooked for the short amount of time to beat the.
So yeah, if you get your hands on them then give 'em a try. They're still enjoyable for what they are even with the faults I listed.

The Den of Chaos 1 & 2 are available on DLsite.
