Review:
SUCCUBUS is a good example of good intentions / bad execution.
The devs wanted to deliver an action packed first-person title full of atmosphere and lust.
Well... they got some parts right, but were shooting far beyond their capabilities.
So you play as a succubus that seemingly going on a rampage killing and torturing other demons in hell. The plot thiccens as she gets captured and tormented by the two antagonists of the story. (which we never hear from again until we face them)
So far so good I suppose..
I mean, this is an adult game, so I'm not looking for deep lore, just plot like anyone else.
However.. the path carved towards her revenge is full of repetitive battles and objectives in a very same-y setting of bone and flesh throughout nearly the entire game.
The game introduces multiple weapon types and various spells, but in reality the very first weapon you find deals fast damage and even has a quick ranged move - once fully upgraded it simply overshadows every other weapon.
Same goes for spells - fireball has massive AoE that all you gotta do is charge it up and cast away, then go in for the kill. It even keeps the biggest trash mobs that are supposed to be unstoppable in their tracks.
Another issue with combat, or rather any asset in the game is that once you've seen the first few stages - you nearly saw it all. That's right.
There is no justification for the game to be as long as it is without introducing new mechanics, distinct areas, unique enemies as you keep on going.
Currently there are only 2 areas that are very different from one another, but the enemies variety is almost the same from start to finish.
So far I've only stated the bad, while I did initially start with "good intentions".
What's good then?
This part makes me a bit mad at the devs, because I can actually see a LOT of potential in the extremely brutal NPCs and enemies executions. The few intimate interactions with other NPCs are also very well done, but there are ONLY 4 of them! one of them is just a repeating animation too.
Why didn't the devs shift their focus to reward the player with new scenes for their accomplishments? I mean, the damn game is even called SUCCUBUS, but you get so little of the context that comes with that label.
The whole game should've been at least 1/5th of its size, with HEAVY focus at the gore and intimate parts. Let people play the game and think "wow, I can't believe they went that far" like the very few NPC executions that actually do leave that kind of impression.
I wanted a disturbing and lustful experience, and instead I got countless ragdolls that can barely hurt me with the only purpose of padding the time it takes me to beat the game.
At least you get rewarded with a complete "gallery" unlock in a form of a giant demon orgy at your home.
Save your money and go watch it instead.
