Review:

A fun little action side-scroller where you beat up your enemies with kicks, punches, shooting, and special moves (on cooldown) that are obtained when defeating bosses.

The sprite work is magnificent and a personal favorite too.
The stages are as straight forward as they get, but still include a bit of a challenge with some platforming and dangerous enemies.

Each area consists of 2 stages + mini stage and a boss fight (same level). If you die on the boss, then you'll have to redo the mini stage again to reach it.

The game does get gradually harder, especially during boss fights. That however, is due to the inability to dodge any attacks properly. There is no dodge button, and Usagi is a rather slow and sluggish character to control.
It does take away from the fun unfortunately, since I've seen people saying that they flat out gave up on killing the final boss, simply because it felt impossible to avoid its attacks.

Other than that, expect rather solid action side scroller, with high effort pixel H animations. (and special boss H CG animations too!)
And yes, there is gallery mode!

Even with its drawbacks, I'd still recommend to check this one out!

Usagi and the Dream Island is available on DLsite.
