Will we fall to the giants... or to infighting?

Hello all, and welcome back to Falthringor! This week, we've got one of our favorite maps yet, the perfect site for a climactic last-stand battle. We've also got a succession crisis plotline, a bunch of castle interior rooms, and some aggressive battle music. Let's dive in!

Borough Guide

This guide is all about the Severed Keep and the folks who live inside. The archers stalk the ramparts, keeping a close watch on any approaching travelers, and you better bet we have a table of rampart encounters so that you can emulate for your favorite scenes from Game of Thrones. Next up, we introduce you to the four potential heirs who might someday take up the mantle of High Kestrel. Can your party help prevent civil war?

Maps

The standout feature of this map is the giant chasm separating the Severed Keep from the rest of Falthringor. Please please use this map for an epic battle. That's what we made it for. As with all of our drawbridge maps, we have a variant available for all patrons so that you can run this map with the bridge retracted. Of course, we also have the radically different "green" variant, for those of you who'd rather plop Falthringor down in some verdant plain.

Matt made a bunch of interior rooms for the Severed Keep: bedrooms for the nobles, a shooting range for the archers, and a room above the drawbridge specifically for when your party needs to quickly winch the drawbridge closed. The gif above shows our imagined placement, but feel free to plop these rooms wherever you deem appropriate! These interior rooms are only available for patrons at the Chief Courier tier and up.

Music

"Archers on the Wall" is our take on folk war music. Flutes and cimbalom accompany aggressive drums and strings. This is battle music, but it has a distinctively Slavic medieval folk flair. If you'd prefer a version with less folk melody, and an emphasis instead on the drums and drones of war, we have an additional variant just for you.

The map is beautiful, but I've been trying to make sense of the geometry of the nobles' rooms and the drawbridge tower and it just doesn't make any. The southern windows in what I assume is Kalina's room implies that this room is above the drawbridge tower (otherwise what is the window looking at?). However, its roof is clearly below the tower's ramparts. The same is true of the northern window of the other nobles' room - it clearly has light coming in from somewhere, but the way the keep is mapped this room has to be below the ramparts. In other words, both nobles' rooms have windows that lead inside a roofed building

In-world answer: It was pretty common to gradually add to fortresses like this, and what was once a window to the outdoors might get filled in or might end up as an interior window. You're absolutely right that the drawbridge tower would be the highest part of the Severed Keep, but it's also possible that it was previously shorter, and that the ancient Duscarn built it higher and higher over the years. Real answer: Yeah, seems like we probably made a mistake with windows placement. If your players where is that light coming from?, you can always just say that the adjacent room has candles or a fireplace or whatever.

Okay, we decided to delve a bit deeper. Cze put together this map to explain how the rooms should line up together. There's still an errant window or two, but this should make the different heights clearer: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1029230887184912404/1094663750973399110/FloorPlan2.jpg
