Likewise in Dune the sandworms, with 80m wide mouths, somehow survive on sandtrout but also chase the slightest morsel that crosses the dessert on foot, even though, it would use far more energy to chase it than eating it would produce.

Yeah, it's always my first thought in that kind of ecosystem. Typically, the largest predator in an environment isn't a gazillion times the size of the next largest animal. I guess they're meant to be like whales eating krill, but I don't know if the analogy works.
