The medieval bestiary thing about bears licking their cubs into shape from shapeless flesh is a nice very weird addition to this mythos. Could lead to some weird bears-are-golems takes, or even a noble house descended from bears where they need to actually do something like that...

That's right -- based on real bears' grooming behaviour, I believe. I should have thought of that. Another thing that could apply to other monsters, there, having to do something to the young after birth.
