Great introduction to the topic. Worth noting that nineteenth century colonization was quite entangled with religion (as in many other places). The landholding haole elite which emerged after the Kuleana Act in 1850 (and the more wordy Act to Abolish the Disabilities of Aliens to Acquire and Convey Lands in Fee Simple) were in many cases the sons of American missionaries who had arrived in previous decades. In this sense the Christianization of Hawai'i went almost literally hand in hand with colonization, as it were the same families leading both efforts.
