I've thought about the player races a bit too. I think the interest in a massive choice range comes from different and overlapping reasons. 1. Different races have cool powers and who doesn't want some of those cool powers? In the same way that everyone took archery specialisation when the Unearthed Arcana came out, dwarves and especially elves had cool powers. And then players started looking at the other humanoids in the MM, and you could play a wider range of creatures in other games like RQ or Rifts. 2. Diversity of races allows you to showcase your difference and find something which isn't just your character but also better represent you as a person. Initially in AD&D non-humans were penalised by the levels they could attain, possibly through some misguided attempt at game balance, or maybe to maintain human supremacy, who knows? But now, if you want to be different because you like to be different, or there's something in that particular difference, you can play that. 3. I had a third point but I forget what it is. Probably the same as one of yours. Personally I almost always play humans because I identify better with them, being one and they already offer a wide range of behaviours. Because for the most part, the other races don't really offer anything different from what a human could be. As in Star Trek, they are just stereotyped people with funny hats. You've got angry people (Klingon), sneaky people (Romulans), humourless rules lawyers (Vulcans), a vile caricature (Ferengi) etc. Sure it's probably harder to make an adventuring party if the group don't all want the same kind of thing but the thing I like about Troika (which I hope to play next week) is there's actual alienness.
