Interesting comment on needing a device or framing narrative to explain how and why a dungeon exists. My brother runs a game in which an ancient city was buried by a cataclysmic earthquake, and small towns have been established over the ruins, providing supplies and provisions to parties of adventures looking for new entrances to explore. Subterranean species are also exploring, from below, so parties of adventures from above and below bump into each other in these underdark ruins. A simple framing device, but effective.

I think that the desire for a framing device is definitely one of those things that I think developed out of the mature game -- that responded to a developing play culture.
