Perhaps the PCs could train their minimals to fight others in friendly combats. They could travel from town to town, looking for the best minimal trainers and challenging them, all the while finding new and exciting minimals and foiling the plots of a dastardly pair of minimal thieves (who I'd call James and Allison).

And combining both creatures, perhaps there is an archdruid who has a plan to raise an army of animals. To get them trained to fight, they reduced them in size and spread them around the countryside. The manimal collecting PCs are playing into their hands! They use the whole panoply of trap animals to protect themself, so where trap animals are present, they have been, or even are. Perhaps they even created these twisted creatures themselves. Eventually the druid's plan will become apparent and the PCs have difficult choices to make about their manimals, and an ever harder time dealing with the druid.
