For the guy going to Japan, you can try joining your domestic university’s Japanese student association. You’ll make lots of friends that are either going to return to Japan within two years, or they can give you advice about life in Japan.

For the last question about talking to religious parents, you definitely want to be financially independent from your parents first before you talk to them
