You're the only person that I've seen react to this film without having watched all five of this century's pre-MCU Spider-Man films, so it was a unique and interesting experience watching your confusion throughout the first half of the film! Eventually, you did piece it together that each of the five "bad guys" in this film is from one of the previous Spider-Man films. Are you ready for a quick run-down of each villain? Here you go: 1. Spider-Man (2002): You saw this one a long time ago. The principal villain was the Green Goblin, the sinister alternate personality of the scientist Norman Osborn (played by Willem Dafoe). During the film, Norman figures out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. The film ended with Norman dying by getting impaled by his own glider when he aimed it at Spider-Man who dodged it. 2. Spider-Man 2 (2004): The principal villain was Doctor Octopus (Doc Ock), whose given name is Dr. Otto Octavius (played by Alfred Molina). He is also a scientist who failed to create a self-sustaining nuclear fusion reaction (his dream) and became bonded with his handling equipment, four artificially intelligent mechanical tentacles. A crucial part of the equipment, the inhibitor chip, got fried in the experiment, resulting in the tentacles being in control of Octavius rather than the other way round. At the end of this film, Peter reveals his identity as Spider-Man and persuades Octavius to let go of his dream for the greater good. Octavius momentarily comes to his senses and commands the tentacles to obey him, sacrificing himself to destroy the out-of-control experiment. 3. Spider-Man 3 (2007): One of the principal villains was Sandman, who was created as a result of Flint Marko (an escaped convict, played by Thomas Haden Church) falling into a particle accelerator (a super-collider). During the film, Peter finds out that five years ago, Marko was Uncle Ben's true killer. The film ends with Marko expressing remorse, explaining to Peter that Uncle Ben's death was an accident that has haunted him, following which Peter forgives him and allows him to escape to be with his daughter. 4. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012): The principal villain was Lizard, whose given name is Dr. Curt Connors (played by Rhys Ifans). He is a scientist who attempts to engineer a revolutionary regeneration serum to help regrow limbs and human tissue. However, something goes wrong and he is transformed into a large reptilian monster. During the film, he finds out Spider-Man's identity and attacks Peter at school. The Lizard's plan is to make all humans reptilian by releasing a chemical cloud to eliminate the weaknesses he believes plague humanity. The film ends with Peter restoring Connors and his victims to normal using an antidote and Connors incarcerated in a high-security asylum. 5. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014): One of the principal villains was Electro, whose given name is Max Dillon (played by Jamie Foxx). He is a mild-mannered electrical engineer who idolized Spider-Man, but turns into a powerful, electrical creature after falling into a tank of electric eels. Electro wreaks havoc by feeding on electricity and causing blackouts. In the end, Spider-Man defeats Electro by overloading his electricity supply, seemingly killing him in the process. Unlike the villains in the previous films, while Electro might have had some clues connecting Spider-Man's identity to Peter Parker, he knew nothing about Peter, having never met him. The first three movies took place in the same universe, in which Tobey Maguire played Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst played his love interest Mary Jane (MJ) Watson. The fourth movie, "The Amazing Spider-Man" marked a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise, where Peter's story (a different one) starts all over again, and the fifth continues this new storyline. So, you should interpret the events of these last two films as taking place in an alternate universe, in which Andrew Garfield played Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Emma Stone played his love interest Gwen Stacey. Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Spider-Man franchise was rebooted once more in 2017, this time with Tom Holland playing Peter Parker / Spider-Man and Zendaya playing his (eventual) love interest Michelle Jones (MJ) Watson. So, one interprets everything happening with Tom Holland's Spider-Man (starting with his first appearance in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War") as happening in yet another alternate universe. With me so far? To summarize, we have three different universes (each with it's own sun, Earth, solar system, milky way, etc.): Toby Maguire's universe (Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman are villains from this universe), Andrew Garfield's universe (Lizard and Electro are villains from this universe), and Tom Holland's universe (Vulture and Mysterio are villains from this universe). NOTE: There are actually an infinite number of universes (that constitute what is known as the "multiverse"), but to understand this film that you just watched (minus that end-credit scene which I won't get into), you need only focus on these three.

Now, with the background from my essay in the previous comment, you are ready to fully understand what happened in this film. When Peter botched Dr. Strange's spell, it began drawing people from alternate universes who knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man, into our (Tom Holland's) universe. Fortunately, Doctor Strange managed to contain the botched spell within a few seconds, but that was enough time to pull in at least seven people from two alternate universes: Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Sandman from Tobey Maguire's universe; Lizard and Electro from Andrew Garfield's universe; and their respective Spider-Mans. (Spider-Men?) Here comes the most confusing part: Even people who were pulled in from the same alternate universe were pulled in from different times within that universe!!! For example, Green Goblin and Doc Ock from Tobey Maguire's universe are both dead in 2021 (when this film came out), so how is it possible for them to have been pulled in? The answer is that Green Goblin was pulled in from sometime in 2002 and Doc Ock was pulled in from sometime in 2004, prior to their respective deaths in Tobey Maguire's universe (there is a scene in this film where some of the villains describe the exact moment they disappeared from their universe and appeared here). (The actors themselves have noticeably aged, but special “de-aging” effects were used to make them look like they did back then.) This is why, if Peter had not stopped Doctor Strange from immediately reversing the botched spell and sending everyone back, both Green Goblin and Doc Ock would have returned to their universe exactly the way they were (without being cured) and therefore would have died, because nothing would have changed when they returned to their universe. By making sure that each of these villains were cured before sending them back to their respective universes, there is now a chance that their lives (and the lives of countless other people who would have been affected by their actions) will be better when they return to their universes - those who would have died may live, those who would have been imprisoned may face less severe consequences, and so on. Of course, this came at a devastating cost to Tom Holland's Peter Parker: Aunt May died and MJ, Ned, and Happy don't know Peter. He has no one.

2023-05-17 09:03:23 I forgot to add that the blind lawyer at the beginning (Matt Murdock) is actually another MCU superhero called "Daredevil" who had three seasons of his own TV show (2015-2018). He has super-heightened senses from being blinded as a young boy that he has learned to control and uses to fight crime as a vigilante. This explains how he was able to catch that brick before it reached Peter. I hope you enjoyed my explanations. Let me know if you have any more questions!

2023-05-17 09:03:23 One more thing: The next Spider-Man film has been confirmed to be in active development. Just last week, Kevin Feige (Marvel's top boss) was asked when Peter Parker will return. Here's the question and his response. Question: "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was such a huge hit, and I know Marvel Studios has the deal with Sony regarding that character. Do you have any updates on when we might be seeing Peter Parker again? Feige: All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.
