I'm so happy you got to experience this film. Yes, the film is loosely based on real events in the lives of two Philadelphia lawyers who sued their respective law firms for wrongful dismissal based on AIDS discrimination. There's a Washington Post article that came out on the heels of the release of this film that describes the story of one of the real lawyers: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1994/01/25/the-ghost-of-philadelphia/fbaf12f4-0580-4e97-bc04-4af2ccbcda10/ As for the absence of Antonio Banderas (Miguel) between scenes and whether they lived together, that's something that bugged me too. I was not at all happy when I found out that some scenes showing more affection between Andy and Miguel were cut, including one with them in bed together. I guess they felt that in order for the film to have a larger educational impact on people, it would be wise to avoid turning off homophobic audience with intimate scenes. Here's one of these cut scenes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKMS91y7Udg

Thank you for this! Yes, I would've enjoyed getting to know their relationship MORE... I probably would've cried a lot more tho --- You know me! 🥲

For May/June, Mark had asked for RENT and Boy Erased. He also wanted me to watch Love, Simon for July... I'll react to those during my hiatus and post when we resume in Sept. 💚💜💙💛🧡

Thank you, my fabulous friend! I love you. Raga, thank you for selecting Philadelphia. I had not seen it for many years and I had forgotten what a powerful (and at times infuriating) story it is.

Oh man, this movie brings up so many emotions for me; sadness, anger, disgust, disillusionment...it's a laundry list, really. I've lost three close friends to HIV/AIDS and this took me right back to watching those beautiful, kind, vibrant people slowly decline to being so gaunt and so weak that at times they could not even speak. It's heartbreaking beyond words. Michele, I would also like to point out that while you are right in that there have been medical advances so that now HIV can typically be prevented from developing into full blown AIDS. However, there still is no "cure." Once a person is infected with HIV there is no known medical way for the body to get rid of the virus. It can only be treated and mitigated, but HIV positive people can pretty much live a normal lifespan. One of my dearest friends has been HIV positive for over twenty years and aside from having the virus he is perfectly healthy. Also, I'm sure people have told you this, but Tom Hanks won his first of back to back Best Actor Oscars for this film. He won again the following year for Forrest Gump.

So sorry about your friends; I thought there was a cure. I guess I'm confusing it with them containing HIV so it doesn't turn into AIDS. I'm always happy to be educated-- we all should be! Tom Hanks did a great job in this film 🥲
