Listen, I'm sure Astrophysicists are confused by this movie. LOL. I've probably watched it 4 or 5 times and I'm not sure I understand it anymore than I did the first time. You're not alone, my friend. Can't wait to watch this reaction tonight after work!

Basically, because the water planet was very close to the giant black hole, the gravity of the black hole warped space-time around the planet. This caused every hour spent on the planet to be 7 years for anyone not within the gravitational pull of the black hole. This is known as time dilation. I’ve often wondered what the guy who remained on the orbiting ship would have seen if he had used a powerful telescope to watch them on the surface of the planet. I assume they would have appeared to him to no be moving at all.
