It still puts opossums in a bad light though O.C.R. Even if Carol willingly took the role it still stereotypes opossums as bad news and troublemakers because they hired her for the part BECAUSE she was a opossum.

That's kind of making an assumption, though. Here it may likely be correct, but it reminds me of in "Jesus Christ Superstar" where Judas was played originally by an African-American actor, and people suggested that it was a deliberate choice because of his general tone of not trying to fight against a repressive regime as a minority. The director said, "No, it's because he's a good actor." And the same thing applied with the original Night of the Living Dead--yes, the main character is played by a black actor and gets shot by rednecks at the end, but that didn't mean there was supposed to be any kind of subtext. It's actually kind of offensive in and of itself to assume that offense was intended.
