Anthony

alex absolutely murdering me less than three minutes into this episode OKAY. OKAY…

elizabeth p.

Thanks for that note, Nemo. Protecting Alex from himself (or not as the case may be)

MarlaBothBothIsGood

Cowboy Beebop and Ghost In a Shell, yeah Alex *high five* (honestly, one of the episodes I "commented" more out loud) Also, as Les Mis nerd I am, as silly curiosity, in Spain in the musical he's Prisoner 23623

As a Digimon fan, I support this episode

this was such a fun episode! i was a bit surprised no one mentioned fullmetal alchemist brotherhood as a starter anime given how solid it is and how it doesnt alienate western audiences who arent familiar with anime as a medium

Cassidy

That was chaotic and lovely (Alex broke down the Enthusigasm Ending cheat code!!), and brought so many memories back! shocked pikachu face.jpg that Nemo is a One Piece fan, given their area of expertise... :D Seconding the comment above, I would also rec FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (the anime adaptation of the manga; the first anime had to improvise its own direction/ending given that it had caught up on the manga chapters at the time) for beginners or people who have a strong opinon about animes without having watched many :3 And since the themes of production/animation weren't really present in the episode, I'll also suggest the sakugabooru blog as a rec: it's really good at explaining glimpses of the industry's contemporary prowesses, struggles, problems and hopes!

Also surprised that FMA never came up, but that's part of what i love about this ep and about EGSM in general: it's not "introductions to a topic", it's "people who love the topic talk about their personal and specific love of it". No Facts Allowed In This Podcast! Only deep dives, strong opinions, long technically unrelated tangents (That Pokémon theory isn't even about the anime, it's about the games! The classic dark&edgy theory for the anime is that Ash has been in a coma since episode 1.) and questionable conclusions! 😄😊🥰 Also very amused by how long it took for Nemo to mention that Naruto is about ninjas. Recs I'm seconding: -Naruto: yeah, Helen, watch Naruto, it's for you. -Natsume's Book Of Friends: I still haven't seen it but i know it's a good rec. -Ouran High School Host Club: for all the nbs out there, you need Haruhi in your life Recs I'm picking up: -Barakamon -Planetes I've been vaguely curious about those two for a long time but Nemo's and Alex's descriptions mean i have to JUMP on them. -GitS SAC: I think the _Innocence_ movie is the only actual GitS stuff I've seen but I love love love it and it had a huge impact on me as a teen; I can very much see the difference in mood with SAC from Alex's description but oh, wow, that sounds like my thing as well. Recs I'm suggesting: -For beginners: yeah, FMA:B, also the manga. In terms of Studio Ghibli, I would NOT start with Grave of the Fireflies or Totoro, but rather with Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky or Howl's Moving Castle. -For Nemo and people who liked Nemo's description of "disillusioned young person": Yotsuba& for the adult-adopts-a-child (manga only, not read it yet but can still vouch for it), Tsuritama and Hikaru no Go for neurodivergent-teens-discover-special-interest-and-bloom versions. Also the entire genre of feel-good manga called "iyashikei", check that out people. -For Alex and people who liked Alex's description of weird, contemplative SF animes: Serial Experiments Lain (absolutely NOT for beginners), Neon Genesis Evangelion of course, and the Ghibli movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. -For people who like The Magnus Archives and Ghibli: Mushishi PS: the transcripter seems to have missed Helen's "Ur-Q" joke, and also i wanna say that joke is AMAZING and solidifies Helen's status as (One Of) The Best RQer.

Mother of Ferrets

Agree with your Ghibli suggestions. I'm also going to go away & find Planetes to watch. Plus yay for Mushishi!

Will always love Bebop, basically new anime lover's required reading

It's also a newer one, though, so given Nemo and Alex, might not be as ingrained in their anime library brains

Alex must not be allowed to learn any more about fanfic; it's already making him too dangerous.
