What strikes me about a lot the adaptations is this whole "Someone's murdering prostitues?!? Well it can only be one man then because goodness knows such heinous violence against women only happened that one time." Also, that idea that only a doctor could be familiar enough with female anatomy to successfully murder a woman is pretty telling of it's time. Oil barons bought like all of England back twenties. Ah, the days before income tax. (I don't know if we're allowed to link to things in comments, but Shut up and Sit Down covered a Jack the Ripper board game way back in their 2013 Halloween Special. I always get a kick out of watching these guys, maybe you will too. https://www.shutupandsitdown.com/videos/halloween-special-2013/ )

Wow that intro is amazing!

Imagine if the zodiac killer got as much of a pop culture adaptation following as Jack the Ripper 100 years from now.

You just made my halloween, thank you so much. I didn't realise that the royal family/freemason plot was a common thing. I just saw it in From Hell and thought is was stupid there.

There was also a book I read once which said that Sherlock Holmes was Jack the Ripper, and also Moriaty. It was a split personality thing.

Bardcraft

So...Jack the Ripper is basically one of the first pre-JFK conspiracy theory.

There are already a few adaptations of the zodiac killer, aren't there?

Kind of surprised you didn't mention the numerous Doctor Who appearances. Includes one episode where he's not even actually there, he's only mentioned as one of the good guy aliens just ate him before the Doctor recruits her on a rescue mission. I mean, I realize you can't cover every single appearance, but Doctor Who when discussing a British topic sounds like a given? Anyway, great video regardless, loved it. (PS: the real-life freemasons are kind of boring)

Thing is we did, and I don't know about numerous - Nella and I had a "surely there are at least SOME" moment, and upon looking into there were only references (as you mentioned) or it only popped up in tie-in material like comics. Since it was so sparse it didn't seem worth making an already long video arbitrarily longer.

That was an interesting order of appearances considering the chronology.

I find it deeply disturbing that people tried to "sex up" Jack the Ripper. I get the investigator as a possible sex symbol. He's troubled, smart and in the protector role. Batman sans cape and belt. Fair enough. But Jack himself? He's very...not the protector. Granted, protector tropes can be problematic. But if good intentions pave the road to Hell, then bad intentions speed you by bullet train instead.

So you know what this means right? You need to do an episode on the Illuminati / Freemasons.

Greg Walters

Huzzah! I'm just sad my favorite Jack isn't included since it's from a book.

Matt Eldritch

A little disappointed not to see any mention of Kolchak the Night Stalker's episode with Jack the Ripper.
