I think there's a couple of places where the clips are missing?

Anonymous

3:58 missed a cut

Y E S!! Also, I didn't think M. Bay's Transformers and Queer Theory would exist on the same timeline, but of course I was wrong! Even though it explained the LACK of LGBT folks in Bay's films.

Joel Eblin

There really isn't a good term for Queer Theory/Studies, is there?

Anthony

a) YAY!! b) possibly some missing edits?

I love how much fun you seemed to have making this video ,#

Oh, thank goodness. I was wondering where The Whole Plate went to. Great work as always, Lindsay.

Ah you uploaded QUEER_THEORY_FINAL instead of QUEER_THEORY_FINAL_FINAL_USETHISONE. We've all been there.

TalysAlankil

This is the best thing. And also I feel kind of glad I get to be in the "wrong file" crowd, usually due to time zones that doesn't happen ^^

Love the shirt <3

I didn't expect The Invisible Man of all films to be brought up

Great to have this back! Nine months ago I worried the libertarians would take one glance at the feminist theory portions and mobilize a nuclear assault that for the internet is a typical Wednesday. But then I remembered, Lindsay Ellis fears nothing.

It's twentygayteen, queer videos all year!

Anonymous

I was getting worried about this series, so glad its back! I havent been thinking about Transformers nearly enough this year

Anonymous

Gotta love that Hunchback 2 footage.

Happy Pride! ✌🏻💙💜💖

Anonymous

Yay! So glad this series is back and love the shirt! I've got a similar one except with dragons, because dragons rule! (or will lead to the end of all things) Happy Pride!

I love this analysis Lindsay

What a blast! And you've sold me on those new Transformers comics, too.

Anonymous

This is all absolutely fascinating and correct and lovely! I'm personally still in the camp of "I think all transformers should be agender or at least nonbinary" due to the fact they reproduce asexually and thus their native cultures would either have no concept of gender or have a concept of gender completely separate from the human one. But at this point it seems like that won't happen anytime soon, so at least homogender relationships are starting to become more prominent in the IDW comics, especially since those narratives are aimed at adult transformers fans and are allowed to be more explicit about homosexuality than a cartoon might be. Although thanks to the ground broken by Steven Universe, even I am daring to hope that gay transformers in the cartoons might become a thing................... plz god i want it

Our Pride Parade was today :)

I like that culture is progressing so that the *absence* of queer-coded characters/behavior is notable and worthy of discussion, and I find your explanation for that absence in this context fascinating.

Thank you! Someone who's explicit explaining and talking about queer theory on youtube finally. I've tried everywhere to find someone to explain what it's all about (besides the obvious) to those of us who never got the opportunity to cover it through our schooling. Is there any more people you could recommend who talk about this beyond the "this can be read queer, this villain is coded queer" obvious level of analysis that most queer people do anyway when they consume media? I'm very interested in finding out more about queer theory in general and there's sod all on youtube that I've been able to find.

Anonymous

Love that you're flying the bi flag (quietly chants *one of us, one of us...") I also think it's just as interesting to analyse the absence of queer coding as the presence of it.

Anonymous

Fantastic video! I was just trying to describe representation and queer coding to some friends the other day, and you've done it much more eloquently!

Anonymous

The only time I have any interest at all in The Transformers films is when you talk about them, Lindsay. I'm not sure how to feel about you for that.

Anonymous

I'd like to request a video about why females exist. The question needs an answer, Lindsay.

Anonymous

I feel like this, plus H.Bomberguy and Shaun releasing a video on the same day, made the month of June not as horrible as it could have been. This video in particular is something I was wondering if you were going to cover regarding The Whole Plate. I'm not sure if this is your goal, but it makes me consider the cultural importance of the Transformers movies.

Watched this today. Awesome job!

I always hated that Simon Furman gave Arcee this gross backstory of being driven insane over a "sex change" performed by a villain. Why would an alien robot who is used to becoming vehicles of all sorts and altering their body with upgrades and new parts go crazy when their body is changed into a "girly" color and getting permanent lipstick on their face? It was just another one of Furman's attempts to erase the original female Autobots. Just like he tried with the "Prime's Rib"comic in which feminists demanded the Transformers to create a female. I just have too much contempt for this man.

The first time I watched I didn't catch the allude to Peterson and was confused why everybody was bringing him up here. So yeah lol. Anyways I thought the Marx-wheel was an interesting approach to lensing the movie, and as I thought about it, yeah toys. Very true how you can kinda love something like this despite an integral superficiality of it. Also interesting segment on the state subsidizing the movies with sensational portrayal of the military. That's very something that would be covered under Marxist discourse, but I can't really wrap my head around what he or others might say about it. Also curious if the chosen philosopher was the only consideration for this piece.
