Great reaction as always, multiple things... 1. The comment about names is spot on, we form bonds with things we give names to and we form bonds with things we know the names of. It is a humanizing behavior, while it is dehumanizing to not name a living thing. It is morally impossible to be indifferent to another person, unless you are fundamentally broken...but if you strip that person of their humanity in your mind, then they become nothing more than a beast to you. Handlers not learning the names of the 86 squadron members not only detaches the Handlers from being emotional over their deaths, but also allows the handlers to treat the 86 as less than human. 2. Remember the visual of Kaie's mech going off on its own to attack and getting stuck in the sinkhole? Shin has been shown before using his pistol to end the lives of fatally wounded 86 by shooting them in the head. The reason for that is to damage the brain beyond use by the Legion. If the Legion reach a pilot before Shin can get to them, then the Legion can potentially harvest a functioning brain and produce either a Black Sheep or a Shepherd. Kaie was too far off from the rest of the squadron, so by the time Shin reached her mech, the Legion had already gotten to her. That's what produces the ghosts on the battlefield that the entire squadron were hype about revenge for...to them, their comrade-in-arms cannot be at peace when being used by the enemy on the battlefield still. A functional brain that is harvested produces a Shepherd, a non-functional but intact brain that is harvested produces a Black Sheep, and a non-functional damaged brain is useless to the Legion.

oooooh yeah i forgot that kaia was far from everyone else. that would explain it. i guess by "torching" her body they might have thought he just shot it with his tank or something instead of doing the normal pistol shot.
