This is always a tough episode. I was immensely shocked the first time I watched it, and I was thinking the same "Why would you even do that as a joke?" things. It's such a horrible thing, but it's also exactly what needed to happen for the sake of the show. And it's also exactly the type of thing that can easily happen when you get careless while wielding immeasurable power. The first viewing of Code Geass was just a show to me. Now whenever I watch it I see an elaborate exposition of the human condition, highlighting every flaw in the way consciousness interacts with ego. Great discussion and speculations. Looking forward to more.

Things like this where a small accident ends up triggering a huge event happens in real life. An example is how a plastic wrapper accidentally littered on the ground reflects the sun on a super hot day and is the spark that ignites an entire forest fire.
