I was spurred to analyze this song by a recent recommendation...as I didn't really realize just how complex the song is. Of course, I've heard it through the years, but I've never given it much thought...until now!

Fascinating, as always. Thank you, Doug! At the end you were talking about how the chord sequences almost set up the modulations. To my ear, the modulation that stands out the most is the very first one, where the vocal first enters. Given that, as you say, this is a very academic piece of music, I would offer that the "uncomfortable" nature of that first one is how the composer "primes" us for all the key signature mayhem that is to come. Because after that first key change, the rest of it - no matter how outlandish it may be - feels almost natural.

For sure...the first one is abrupt and unexpected...and the rest of the modulations continue the trend, so we're not as surprised by them.
