Come take a ride with me as we listen to, break down, and watch the Desert Chase scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark. I have the full orchestral score for this one, and it's a fascinating look into some of the orchestration techniques composers use when writing film scores for action-packed movies.

Interesting. Have you considered video game sound tracks? Danish Jesper Kyd is one of my favourites.

Jim Reeves

Summon the Heroes is also fun, again, loads of brass.

Really enjoyed that one Doug, just the right level of analysis for me. Really interesting to see how well structured the music is to take into account all the elements going on around it in the cinematic section it accompanies. It makes me marvel at the skill in being able to pull all that together whilst the film is being edited and finalised. The mind that can do that is just astounding to me. Great one, and for one of the most iconic soundtracks of our time.

Thank you, Doug for that analysis! You made me dig into my brain to find the very limited knowledge I gained from the music courses I took in college in the late seventies and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I’ve always had a great amount of respect and admiration, as so many us do, for John Williams and seeing his compositional prowess here just enhances those feelings. Cheers!

Williams "is" a classical composer, and a gifted one, I think. Most of his non-film pieces I've heard are incredible. My favorite is the cello concerto. Great stuff!

Another fantastic watch. Never too much information, it's fascinating even to someone who is ignorant of all musical theory to discern what we can and just appreciate the work and ideas. I realize you must be way too busy to answer questions but I'd be really interested to know what your take is on minimalist composers when used in films such as Philip Glass - Koyaanisqatsi Michael Nyman - Peter Greenaway films like The Draughtsman's Contract - The Cook, the thief, his wife and her lover. David Motion - Orlando
