In this episode of Behind the Score, I'm taking you through one of my favorites from my own catalog. Serenade to Music is written for SSAA chorus with piano and oboe and makes use of text by Shakespeare from The Merchant of Venice. I hope you enjoy!

I'm sure I'm not alone in expressing my gratitude to you for sharing your talent with us! It's always a great treat to watch you analyze someone else's music, but sharing your own is a whole different level. Thank you!

More on pitch classes? Yes, please!

So different from RVW's "Serenade", and I'll opine that I like your setting better. It speaks to me in a more intimate way. I particularly liked the juxtaposition of the movement of the earth with the movement of the stars in the heavens, and your rhythmic/melodic devices to achieve that end. Lovely. And the pitch class discussion wouldn't have made sense without your recommendation of the Allen Forte book in our previous lesson. Great lecture and thanks, Doug !

I always feel like I'm baring my soul when I put out a new piece of music. It's always exciting and a little bit scary. How wonderful to see you put yourself out there so generously. The joy on your face shows how much you love what you do and how lucky are we to share in this! This was absolutely beautiful and I look forward to hearing more of your work in the future. Thank you so much for sharing.
