Hey y'all,

The voting in round one was intense and close. Here are the 13 that made the cut...

As a recap of last time...

For our Fan Favorites video this month, we're going to be selecting songs that have already been included on my 'Master List' for future episodes and videos. I recently posted the most current update of the list...which simply reflects the recommended, curated, & researched short list of music that I'm most often selecting from for Daily Doug episodes, Extended Play Lounges, Behind the Score, and even our Council of Dougs hangouts.

About twice a year, I plan to take a month and get to the songs that are on this list that are deemed the most overdue and desired by the community.

So...ROUND 2...

PICK UP TO 5 of these below that you would prioritize first and most want included in the video.

I'm not sure how many songs I'll be selecting yet. I'll be including a total of about 45 minutes of music for the video.

This round will go all this week. We're using the honor system for voting...keep it to 5, please! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Happy voting!

Thank you for including Procol Harum's "In Held Twas in I" and not their pop "hits" - Still one of my favs to this day. Amazing Song / Amazing Band.

Traffic, please!

If Biko makes it, I truly hope it is the closing number of Gabriel's set at the 1986 Amnesty International concert at Giant's Stadium. That is, to this day, one of the most powerful concert performances I've ever seen, and I experienced it on MTV. Unfortunately, most uploads of it I have seen are not the best quality; hopefully someone knows if a good clean version. But it is truly worth the poor quality for the power of the performance. 💖

Odyssey by The Dixie Dregs would be amazing too!

Hope we are talking about the Live version of Low Spark from 'On The Road - long track but so much richer than the studio version

I know The Aristocrats won't make it, but it's still absolutely incredible. If you want to listen to great musicians, it doesn't get much better than this.

Arpeggio Blues

Al Stewart did an amazing piece I don't think many people realize. Yeah the one above is radio-play, and really isn't an introduction to NEW music or obscure gems out there.. Al Stewart's first (or so) album had a piece called "Road To Moscow" it is a deep emotional piece. and I highly recommend it.. of all Al Stewarts music, this one stood out and I believe it's one of his best and most imaginative

Arpeggio Blues

We need to be careful about tending to go to the popular side of progressive rock.. We're not discovering anything if we always choose the songs we already know and love and have heard multiple times.. Aren't we looking to explore? or are we just trying to be an amazon music kind of site? all your favorites played here.. ??

I echo Arpeggio Blues’ recommendation for Roads to Moscow. Epic! His historical treatments are so inventive and memorable. But I know that’s not on the list so I’ll go with Year of the Cat. On the Border or Palace of Versailles would have also been great intros to Al for someone unfamiliar with his music. So much of his pieces are steeped in world history, but his songs often bring world history down to a personal level and make the stories more metaphorical. I guess I need to get on here more often and plug more Al Stewart!

Arpeggio Blues

Oh I know it's all new to you. I'm just waiting to push your envelope. Been listening to it for a very long time.. All good.

Arpeggio Blues

I agree, totally. And I am really grateful to run into someone who even knows about "Road to Moscow" this era of his really is his most creative and impactful. agreed

Do you know that he still tours? He lives in L.A. He has been touring most recently with a young band called The Empty Pockets. They are phenomenal. Before that, for years his sideman was Dave Nachmanoff on guitar. My partner and I have seen him some 50 times in concert! Each one a delight, because of the stories he tells onstage.

John B

Those songs are popular for a reason. We want him experience the very best, and not just the two or three bands who have come out of the 21st century.

If the quality of the video is sketchy, that should be no problem. But please let us not listen closely to a poor audio recording. Doug has mentioned spot checking music that he's about to review, and I assume that he will choose only a high quality sound, no matter the picture quality. Errr, let us hope so.

Indeed! Al Stewart has some great songs, but “Roads to Moscow” is his masterwork. Great music, excellent instrumentation, and lyrics that tell an amazing based-on-truth story that will break your heart. I hope no one ever asks me to list my ten favorite songs, but this would be among them.

Al Stewart takes history, turns it into storyteller classics, and then composes gorgeous ballads from them

I'm not sure if that's the one I saw. I think I saw a version from the 70s that had Stevie on the piano stage left. The studio track is quite long in itself. Personally, I almost always recommend a new listener to review the studio version of most songs first, and then check out the live.

Before Al recorded, he often played a Bob Dylan catalogue. I have a live recording of him doing Dylan's most classic "it's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" by request. He said he could barely remember the song, and then played it flawlessly.

Hoyet Hemphill

Dixie Dregs are not a band that a lot of people know. Talented musicians and so much fun.

My advice to Doug: Give little weight to whether a song is overplayed/overanalyzed. I've notice this comment a lot. I think it's a mistake to believe that your audience, now and far into the future, will care how many others have done it.

I've been listenin' to Al since Time Passages was released and he went on and on about Nostradamus. (One named Hister, indeed.) He has a lot of great songs and he pays particular attention to his lyrics. And yet, I would still prefer that Year of the Cat be the first song/album to listen to. It's 70s pop perfection.

DJ Marquis Marc Rambeau du Tacoma

Barbara, Have you seen him perform my favorite Bob Dylan song, "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)?" I just found a tape of him trying to recall the lyrics when asked to play a Dylan song by request. I don't know when it was recorded, but he said on tape that he used to play the song before he was famous.

How sweet is this? I chose 7 songs from the prior list, and they're all here. What good taste you all have!

Mark B: if you’re not familiar with the album “Past, Present and Future” where “Roads to Moscow” first appeared, you should give it a try. His original intention was to write a song for each decade of the twentieth century. That intention was abandoned, but it’s still a great set of historically-related songs. There’s not a bad song on the album, but the second side (ancient LP-speak!) was superb: “Roads to Moscow,” “Terminal Eyes,” and “Nostradamus.” And it had a great album cover too! 😁

Speaking of giving up on a project, Al wrote the song Katherine of Oregon and joked that it was a pun on Henry the 8th’s wife Katherine of Aragon (but the song has nothing to do with her). He said he might want to do one on each of the six wives. I’m still waiting to hear Anne of Cleveland! My home town!

Mark J Moerman

Barbara and I have seen Al in concert 50 times, and I saw him 5 times prior to that. I've heard him do a one or two Dylan songs, such as Love Minus Zero/No Limit, but never It's Alright Ma.

Mark J Moerman

I've been the merch table guy at most of Al's concerts in Washington and Oregon since about 2006/07, which has been a lot of fun.

DJ Marquis Marc Rambeau du Tacoma

Mark K: Well, I got my Al Stewart albums so long ago, I forget which song comes from which album. However, I do remember having the album with Terminal Eyes on it, as that is one of my favorite song of his. Rivulets of dark wine for eggmen everywhere!

DJ Marquis Marc Rambeau du Tacoma

Mark J: Hmmmm. I only recently discovered the recording on YouTube, made an mp3 file out of it, and put it in my collection. I have no idea when the performance was recorded, but I imagine it was at a small club.

Killer track, and Transatlantic does an outstanding rendition of this as well!!!
