I was pleased to see that Queensrÿche won our poll, because I've been itching to hear this epic concept album for a while. And, it didn't disappoint. Besides the top notch musical performances, the story was quite moving and thought provoking. I hope you enjoy!

One of my favourite prog metal albums. Music is memorable – not too complicated, but performed very profesionally. Production is on point (especially drums, as Doug pointed out) and story is fascinating. Because of this album, Queensryche together with Dream Theater and Fates Warning are called "The Holy Trinity" of progressive metal. But Doug hasn't reacted to Fates Warning yet. Maybe the time has come?

Don't miss all of the Communist revolution references and imagery here. Niki AND GEOFF are clearly sympathetic to the justification if not the communist "solution" with the revolution. The comparison to the inequalities in US in the 1980s is pretty clear too. I'm guessing Geoff's very overt politics were one of the things that caused a rift with his bandmates.

I couldn’t disagree more. It’s a cautionary tale about;what happens when you go down any extremist path and drink the cool- aid. They only covered this in about a thousand interviews in the 80s and 90s. And your assumption that Geoff’s politics “caused a rift with his bandmates” is nothing more than you projecting your own feelings on a situation you know nothing about. .

My first exposure to Queensryche, though I'd heard of them from years back. Prog-metal isn't my thing though, so I couldn't get into it, musically or conceptually.

Of course they said that publicly so as not to alienate fans. Geoff Tate has on several occasions described himself as a Socialist and descried Reagan era right-wing politics. Yes, it can be interpreted as about extremism on either side, but Geoff's take here is pretty clear I think.

My joint favourite album of all time with Dream Theater’s Images & Words - another album desperate for the Doug love. Interestingly, in the video for Eyes Of A Stranger, Dr X works in the hospital Nikki is taken to.

I haven't listened to this one front to back in ages. Glad to do so with my buddy Doug! I remember loving the harder metal 'edge' of this album when it first came out -- i was much more "Genesis" than "Iron Maiden" in my teens. That snare drum you noticed has always been a favorite part of this album for me, although I'm not sure I realized it until you mentioned it. I remember feeling like they took a little TOO much from Pink Floyd, most notably The Wall - the opening of Eyes of a Stranger is practically a direct lift from Welcome to the Machine, and they've used it a bunch of other compositions too. When you got to the end, when Nicky's voice says "I remember now..." all I could think of was the end matching up to the beginning and wrapping around like a never ending cycle. Of course, this would be another hat-tip to The Wall, which ends and begins pratically the same way. I remember hearing this for the first time without the benefit of any liner notes and thinking "how did they make Geoff's voice sound so 'female' for the Mary parts, not realizing that there was another person involved in the production. haha. How on earth did they find a woman with nearly exactly the same vocal timbre as Geoff? I remember feeling a little foolish when I found out the truth, as it had been many months that I held this belief!

Back in 2016 I put together a project to do some live shows, covering this album in its entirety. We did a little mini-tour with it in Ohio and had some really good turnouts. Our goal was to be as musically accurate to the album as possible so we spent hours working out all of the guitar parts and harmonies, etc. They always wrote their rhythm sections so that one guitar would be playing a lower root and fifth and the other would be doing a higher third and 7th or 9th. It was one of my favorite times performing live. We had to suddenly get a new drummer like a week before our bookings so the guy we got to fill in was AMAZING. Only two rehearsals and he nailed it. The bass player took the time to create a video background for the whole thing and even purchased an old CRT television and actually setup and filmed himself shooting it to bust the glass for the intro to Mission.
